The federal coordinator of United Left, Antonio Maíllo, believes there should be resignations if the content of a police report, revealed by the newspaper El Español, which would point to Morocco’s involvement in the flood of immigrants entering Ceuta in the last two days of July, is confirmed. “If it is confirmed that the police have been disloyal to the Ministry of the Interior, the director general of the Police will have to resign, and if it is confirmed that the Ministry of the Interior had this information and did not process it, then the Minister of the Interior will have to take responsibility,” said the leader of the organization, which is part of the Government.
Maíllo has reiterated that it is “evident that there are terminals in the State structure that operate independently and in parallel and with disloyalty, if confirmed, with the legitimate Governments of our country.” After the existence of said report was revealed, the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, sent a letter in the early hours of this Wednesday to the director of the National Police, Francisco Pardo Piqueras, acknowledging that he was unaware of the information published in the media and asking for an account regarding it. The head of the Police, already in the morning, met with the person responsible for the agents who prepared the report on Morocco.
For the IU coordinator, the “connection of the Moroccan Government in the crisis” is “evident.” “Not a leaf moves in Morocco without the Government knowing; between 70,000 and 80,000 people do not move to the Ceuta border in trucks, walking massively without being detected,” he criticized in a much more forceful position than the PSOE, which until now had distanced the neighboring country from what happened.
“Continuing to say that Morocco had nothing to do with it is becoming increasingly difficult,” also criticized Verónica Barbero, coordinator of Movimiento Sumar and spokesperson for the group in Congress. The deputy has demanded “clarity and transparency” about the Police report sent to the National Court and has called for “accountability” if that information was not transmitted to the Interior. “If the content of the report is confirmed, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs should urgently summon the Moroccan ambassador in Spain to demand explanations,” she also requested.
The Spanish Government is “surprised” that the Police have not shared this information with the Government, according to sources from La Moncloa, who say they do not yet have the report. “It is surprising that, if these evidences already exist, the Government has not been informed to be able to make decisions that could affect national security,” they pointed out.
One of the most relevant voices of Sumar in the Council of Ministers, the Culture Minister, Ernest Urtasun, has remained “cautious” about this information, but has also acknowledged that “by common sense” it seems “evident” that “some kind of responsibility by action or omission Morocco will have.”
Among parliamentary partners there is also confusion. The PNV, for now, refers to Pedro Sánchez’s appearance this Thursday in Congress to explain the management of the crisis in Ceuta; ERC sources demand that the Government “clarify” the situation urgently; while Podemos has again been the harshest. Through its Secretary of Organization, Pablo Fernández, it has requested Marlaska’s resignation. “We have been saying for years that the State security forces and bodies need to be cleaned and it is no news that there are forces within the deep State willing to do anything to destabilize a Government. But it is unquestionable that Marlaska cannot remain one minute longer at the head of the Ministry of the Interior,” he defended.
For his part, the president of Castilla-La Mancha, Emiliano García-Page, one of the most critical socialist voices, has demanded that, if the information is confirmed, “it must have obvious consequences in all areas.” To which he added a question: “I really ask myself if it had to be a judge who requested a report on what happened” and “if no one else had asked or suggested to the National Police or our intelligence services to report.”
The PP calls for Marlaska’s resignation
The secretary general of the PP, Miguel Tellado, has demanded the resignation of Minister Marlaska with insults such as “scoundrel, incompetent and liar.” The PP spokesperson in Congress, Ester Muñoz, has also called for the resignation of the Interior head, accusing the Government of “lying,” as it supposedly had this information collected in the police report, and decided “to do nothing” in Ceuta.
