The Government decides to reinstate border controls with Italy
The Government has decided to reinstate border controls with Italy from 00:00 hours this Saturday, initially until September 7, after the Executive of that country rejected lifting its controls on travelers coming from Spain following the massive entry of people into Ceuta from Morocco.
Italy decided to carry out these controls from August 1, and the Government had asked the Italian authorities this Friday to lift them before the end of next Sunday or, otherwise, it would adopt “proportional” measures to protect the interests and dignity of Spanish citizens.
The request was rejected by Giorgia Meloni’s Government, warning that it did not accept ultimatums, and in response, Pedro Sánchez’s Executive has decided to act in the same way and impose these controls on travelers coming from Italy. The Government justifies this decision in a statement due to the “persistent irregular migratory pressure suffered by the transalpine country.”
Border controls have been operational since 00:00 hours this Saturday, August 8, and consist of identity control (identity document or passport) and nationality of travelers and, in the case of third-country nationals, visa or residence permit. These measures will be carried out randomly and will be in force until 00:00 hours on September 7, unless a change in the circumstances that motivated their adoption advises modifying that period.
