Marco Bezzecchi cried crossing the finish line and unleashed a sea of tears among the tifosi and all the members of Aprilia present in Mugello. The MotoGP World Championship leader, with another Sunday showcase, achieved his fourth victory of the season at the Italian GP after starting from pole position and overcoming the challenge posed by three-time champion Pecco Bagnaia and his Ducati, great dominators here over the last five years. The emotion indicated that this was no ordinary win, as the Noale factory managed, with the help of its Rimini ace, to conquer the home Grand Prix for the first time. On the podium, Madrid’s Jorge Martín escorted his teammate in a new one-two for the official RS-GP machines while his Turin colleague from the Rossi academy saved third place at the last moment.
“It’s an incredible feeling, I dreamed of this since I was very young, I have no words,” said the winner in English, unleashed in celebration with the stands. And he switched to Italian to address the masses. “Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Mugello, today we had a great time,” managed to say the 27-year-old rider. In enemy territory, where Ducati had accumulated three consecutive triplets, Aprilia dominated throughout the weekend to confirm its preeminence and favoritism in the current campaign.
“I’m happy, the team worked wonderfully well this weekend. We have to continue this progression and I can only congratulate Marco, because winning here at home surely means a lot to him and to the whole group,” agreed Martín, who remains close to his teammate in the championship standings. They are separated by 17 points after a third of the season has passed, with no other rivals than the satellite Ducati of Fabio Di Giannantonio, who is 39 points behind in the table and was fifth this Sunday.
The men of the official Borgo Panigale team are still very far behind, dragging their worst victory drought since 2014 just as the brand celebrates its centenary. “I gave everything for the home fans. It was very tough, I resisted Ai as best I could, and we deserved a result like this at least,” evaluated Bagnaia, third after resisting the attack from the satellite Aprilia of Ogura in the last corner of the last lap and winless since the Japanese GP that crowned his teammate Marc Márquez champion last year. The defending champion was seventh in the end in his return to competition 20 days after his ninth operation on his right arm since 2019.

“I’m happy, the decision to return was brave because it’s a tough circuit to come to injured. We passed with flying colors, I had flashes of speed, but in the race it was like a mountain pass, little by little I fell back. I didn’t have fun, this is pure hard work. But I know you have to go through this process,” explained number 93, satisfied with his return. He is 102 points behind the leader in the standings when 37 points are awarded each weekend. Although he wanted to conserve and not take too many risks, he was the one who made the most overtakes in a race with a double function.
The first started with a great start from Bezzecchi and a mistake by Raúl Fernández, winner with Trackhouse on Saturday. The Madrid rider went wide and fell to the back of the classification after starting second, and in the first corner it was Martín who took the lead for moments. Bez responded immediately and Bagnaia showed aggression like in his best days. Pulling from the heart, the Italian Ducati rider took the lead from the third lap and did not let go until the winner decided to change pace and escape to the front of the pack once past the halfway point of the race.
If the top three were riding at ease and at a different pace, behind the exchange of blows was notable between Marc Márquez, who rode fourth for much of the race, and the Murcian Pedro Acosta (KTM) and Fermín Aldeguer (Ducati Gresini). These three provided much of the spectacle and the action then moved to the front when Bagnaia suffered the fading of his tires. Bezzecchi tore off his stickers at San Donato on lap 14, and on the next lap Martín had reduced the one-second difference he had in the previous laps. On lap 16, the Madrid rider secured the one-two for the official Aprilias, and behind, the Japanese Ogura emerged from nowhere to take down everyone. From 13th on the grid to putting his bike ahead of the Turin rider after cutting three seconds in four laps, without a final reward due to millimeters.
In case there was still any doubt, the sorpasso of Aprilias over Ducatis is confirmed with the milestone achieved in Mugello by the Noale team, finally prophets in their own land.
