The mortgage market recorded 45,907 loans for the purchase of a home in June, 10.8% more than a year ago, breaking the decline seen in May, according to data published this Wednesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE). Adding the June figure to those of the other months of the year, the first half of 2026 closed with 259,684 signings, 6.7% more than in 2025, and the highest figure for this period since 2010.

The growth in operations occurred despite a somewhat less buoyant real estate market (from January to June, 2.6% fewer houses were sold than in the same period the previous year) and the fact that prices keep rising. In fact, the average amount of mortgages signed in the sixth month of the year was 178,365 euros, 6% more than a year earlier; while the average interest rate at which the loans were granted was 2.96%, two hundredths less than in May, and one less than in June 2025.
