Iranian Narges Mohammadi, winner of the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize, has been transferred from the prison where she had been held since December 12, 2025, to a hospital in the capital of Iran, Tehran. She has also been granted a suspension of her sentence under a high bail, a foundation run by her family reported this Sunday.

Mohammadi, 54, received the award in 2023, the year she was also imprisoned for her campaign in favor of women’s rights and the abolition of the death penalty. Two weeks ago she suffered a heart attack.
Her family had requested that she be transferred from Zanyán, northwest of Tehran, where she was serving her sentence and where she had initially been admitted, so that she could receive better medical care.
She is now at Tehran Pars hospital, where she is receiving treatment from her own medical team after being transferred by ambulance, according to the Narges Mohammadi Foundation in a statement.
Mohammadi was sentenced to a new term of seven and a half years in prison, the foundation said in February, weeks before the United States and Israel launched their war against Iran. The Nobel committee then called on Tehran to release her immediately. In total, she has been imprisoned 14 times.

The activist had been arrested in December after denouncing the death of lawyer Khosrow Alikordi. A prosecutor told journalists that she had made provocative comments during Alikordi’s memorial event.
The foundation has not provided details about the conditions of the bail or the suspension of the sentence. “However, a suspension is not enough,” it emphasized in its statement. “Narges Mohammadi needs permanent specialized care. We must ensure that she never returns to prison.”
Iran shut down most of the internet in the country in January, while authorities cracked down on mass protests triggered by economic unrest. Various human rights organizations have reported ongoing executions of people involved in the unrest.
