The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, announced this Wednesday in Barcelona that the Executive will promote this week the processing to approve the general budgets for 2027, the first of the legislature. In the closing speech before the Cercle d’Economia, Sánchez sought a striking effect before an audience full of businessmen and thus expressed his determination to complete the legislature at a time when his Government and the PSOE are facing several judicial cases. “They will be social Budgets that will strengthen the Welfare State and will live up to what citizens deserve,” he affirmed, pointing out that the accounts will focus on housing and greater fiscal co-responsibility.

With this decision, Sánchez has responded to all the pressures from his partners and the opposition who demand early elections, scheduled for 2027. Far from that, the president has revealed his objective of initiating all procedures now, in addition to adding his intention that the accounts will boost the new regional financing system, now up in the air as its processing in Congress has not yet begun. The announcement also confirms what was taken for granted but had not yet been made official: that the Government will not submit the accounts for 2026 to Congress.
Without the slightest allusion to the judicial siege that the PSOE is experiencing and the very trickle of information from this same Thursday, Sánchez stood before Catalan businessmen with a speech in which he highlighted the entire economic and social balance of his eight years in office. “The OECD has confirmed that it is the economy that will grow the most in 2026 with 2.6%,” he defended. “We have done a lot, it is clear that we still have a lot to do. We must do it together, Catalonia and Spain,” he specified.

During his speech, Sánchez made a clear nod to Catalonia by advocating for the reunion agenda and his desire for the “milestone” of the amnesty law coming into force to be confirmed this year. Not only that: he appealed to his will to fulfill his commitments signed with Junts per Catalunya in Brussels and the roadmap signed with Esquerra. “We hope that the amnesty law will be effective this legislature. But that does not obviate the fact that we must confront the political conflict,” he argued, emphasizing the Government’s decision to tackle an “entrenched” problem.
