Accusations of violent conduct against women against Republican Congressman Max Miller date back to his high school days, when he allegedly pushed a young woman who had rejected him down some stairs. Miller, who has categorically denied all allegations, is continuing his campaign to retain his seat in the November midterm elections. His district is considered important for Republicans in their attempt to prevent Democrats from regaining control of the House of Representatives. Despite the controversy, President Donald Trump has not withdrawn his support for the former White House adviser during his first term. “It’s a sad situation, especially when you know someone very well and see them going through this. But these are allegations,” Trump said on Sunday when questioned by a reporter in the Oval Office.
This Tuesday, the congressman announced on the social network X that he will voluntarily hand over documentation related to the case as part of an ethics investigation. The goal, he wrote, is “to clear my name of these horrible attacks against me and my family. I have absolutely nothing to hide.” Two days earlier, Miller released a video of almost 20 minutes in which he gave his version of the events and assured that if the accusations were true, “I would be in jail.” He also published a recording of a campaign event to make clear that he has no intention of leaving the race.

The fact is that the pressure for Miller to leave office is growing even within Republican ranks. Among those demanding his resignation is Senator Bernie Moreno, father of the woman accusing the congressman of violence, Emily Moreno. The senator broke his silence on Sunday and said Miller should “seek professional help” and leave his seat because, in his view, he does not meet the minimum standards to hold public office. “He is a danger to my daughter, and I hold my breath every minute he has custody of my granddaughter,” he wrote on his X account. “Out of concern for my family’s safety, I hoped to keep this matter private, but Max Miller’s increasingly erratic and dangerous behavior has made that impossible.”

Accusations against Miller
Miller and Emily Moreno, divorced since 2025 after three years of a marriage both describe as stormy, are now engaged in an intense legal battle over custody of their two-year-old daughter. A court has issued mutual restraining orders and each claims the other poses a risk to the child.
In documents filed with the court, Emily Moreno claims to have been a victim of domestic violence. She states that in 2024 Miller threw hot water at her, causing burns, and that a year later he pointed a gun at her head. She also accuses him of pushing her against a wall during a custody exchange in February, an incident in which, according to her version, the child suffered a broken collarbone. Moreno says she never reported these incidents to the police for fear that “no one would believe her.”

The congressman denies all these allegations. He claims, on the contrary, that his ex-wife has mistreated the child, although so far he has not presented evidence to support that claim. In the video he posted on X, he said Moreno follows a pattern of making “serious and destructive accusations without absolutely any proof.” He also stated that she has faced “significant mental health issues” and that the complaints arose “in the heat of our custody dispute.” Miller denied any responsibility for his daughter’s injury and published text messages and audio recordings that, according to him, prove his innocence.
Moreno is not the only woman who has reported violent behavior by the legislator. Former White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham, who had a romantic relationship with Miller, said he pushed her against a wall and slapped her in 2020. She recounted these episodes in an opinion article published by The Washington Post, without naming him. Her identity came to light later when the congressman sued her for defamation. The litigation ended with an out-of-court settlement. However, a few weeks ago Grisham filed a new lawsuit claiming Miller breached that agreement by making disparaging comments about her. The case is ongoing in the courts.
Allegations about Miller’s conduct go back even to his adolescence. A report by Politico, published in 2021, revealed that when he was a high school student he allegedly pushed a young woman who had rejected him down some stairs. The Washington Post also reported that in 2007 he was accused of hitting a man on the back of the head and fleeing from the police. Two years later he faced a charge for underage drinking and was later cited for disturbing the peace after a fight outside a bar.
As the complaints accumulate, pressure is mounting for Miller to abandon his candidacy. Democrats have joined in, seeing the scandal as an opportunity to contest a key district in the November elections. Still, a very close race is expected. A Republican source cited by the AP agency said the party is already considering possible replacements if Miller decides to withdraw: state representative Mike Dovilla and former state senator Kevin Coughlin.
Miller is seeking a third term in the House of Representatives. Two years ago he was re-elected with just over 51% of the vote and, in this year’s Republican primaries, he faced no opposition. If he maintains his candidacy, he will face Democrat Brian Poindexter in November.
