Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, has stepped in to put out the controversial political fire sparked by the approval of the judicial reform to shield the Electoral Tribunal of the Federal Judiciary (TEPJF). One of the modifications that has triggered a wave of questions and passed the Congress filter — with a majority of Morena and allies — benefits magistrates Mónica Soto, Felipe de la Mata, Felipe Fuentes, and Reyes Rodríguez so they can be re-elected in 2028 and remain in the country’s highest electoral body for six more years, that is, until 2034. “What is proposed is not that they stay [in office] 17 years as it is stated there, but that they can participate again in the election,” the president has tried to clarify, assuring that the conditions under which they could participate again in the elections must be regulated.
