Solved the enigma of the urn with ashes found in the locker of a supermarket in Benidorm: it was left by a relative due to some home renovations

The Local Police of Benidorm have located the family of the person whose ashes remained in a funeral urn that was in the lockers of a supermarket in the city and have already handed it over to them, after identifying them through consultations in police databases. A relative deposited the urn there because their house is under renovation and they thought it was better protected that way, according to the initial explanations given.

The container was discovered by a supermarket worker on Monday morning when she was checking the lockers usually used by customers to leave bags from other stores or bulky personal items during shopping. Upon verifying that the urn contained ashes, she called the police officers.

The spokesperson for the Local Police, Quique Tortosa, explained that the calls made through social networks and the media did not allow locating the owners of the urn, so the officers resorted to their computer databases and those of other security forces.

These procedures have allowed identifying the relatives of the deceased person, to whom the urn has finally been delivered. According to Tortosa, the family was unaware until that moment that the locker where it had been deposited had been opened. The officers considered transferring the urn to the municipal cemetery if they could not identify its owners.

The message sent on Monday by the Local Police through their social networks went viral and began as follows: “Keys, wallet, mobile… are the most common forgettings. But this is not something we find every day.”
