The Galician folk trio Tanxugueiras, whose fame soared to the skies at Benidorm Fest 2022 with the song Terra, has spoken out about the boycott suffered in Palencia on September 3, where their performance was delayed by 40 minutes (it was scheduled for 8:45 p.m.) due to a protest over the Ceuta crisis. The Plaza Mayor of Palencia, which was celebrating the San Antolín festivities, became a scene of tension when a group of people burst in, shouting slogans in favor of Ceuta, against the Government, and insulting the group’s singers.

The group made up of Aida Tarrío and the twins Olaia and Sabela Maneiro, one of the most important in the current Galician music scene, thanked the public for their support in an Instagram message: “We want to thank the people of Palencia who were there to see us play. These debates are necessary, but let’s seek more respect and affection than hatred and insults.”

Tanxugueiras has stood out since its beginnings for preserving the heritage of Galician folklore, such as the oral tradition of songs and the use of tambourines, and linking that root with the modern possibilities of urban music and pop. At Benidorm Fest 2022, they received massive public support, winning over the audience with the song Terra, performed entirely in Galician. Despite the audience’s enthusiasm, they ultimately did not make it to Eurovision.
