The Secretary General of Government of Zacatecas, Rodrigo Reyes, affirmed this Tuesday that a group of agricultural producers caused the strong fire that burned the warehouses of Mexican Food Security (Segalmex) in the state capital. “Around four in the afternoon, during one of the demonstrations by bean producers, a first fire was registered, which was started using gasoline cans and vehicle tires in the maneuvering yard,” Reyes explained in a video shared on social media. The farmers were protesting to demand compliance with the bean collection authorized by the federal government. Different agencies have mobilized to try to put out the fire, which so far has not left any victims.

Reyes explained that the fire got out of control shortly after seven in the evening, when the flames spread to the Segalmex warehouse. “From the State Government, we speak out against the use of violence and these protest methods. Reaching these extremes poses a risk to the population,” indicated the Secretary General, who reported that the Attorney General’s Office has already opened an investigation file.
Dozens of farmers have mobilized from different parts of the State to take to the streets of the Zacatecan capital and demand that local authorities comply with the collection of 100,000 tons of beans authorized by the federal government. The collection represents an extraordinary expansion compared to the 96,000 tons already accumulated in the territory, which positions Zacatecas as the State “with the largest quantity of beans produced and delivered with guaranteed prices,” according to the state government.

Carrera met with the producers to address the matter early on. “We will continue to support bean producers before federal instances, prioritizing dialogue and agreements,” shared the Undersecretary of Zacatecas, Omar Carrera, on his social media.
Carrera later agreed with the secretary’s version regarding the origin of the fire. “It was derived from a group of protesters who were asked not to set tires on fire. Unfortunately, they became aggressive, and there are the consequences,” he accused in statements shared by communicator Paco Elizondo. Carrera assured that his team spent the day conversing with Segalmex personnel to try to resolve the producers’ concerns. “Today, unfortunately, these warehouses are lost,” he stated in the images, shared by communicator Paco Elizondo. The affected part was some warehouses full of groceries that, according to Carrera, supply small shops throughout Zacatecas.
