The judge orders jail without bail for the parents of the baby who died in Santa Bàrbara

The judge has ordered provisional detention without bail for the parents of the 18-month-old baby whose remains were found in the family home in Santa Bàrbara (Tarragona), the Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia (TSJC) has reported. The holder of seat 2 of Amposta (Tarragona) has ordered provisional detention, communicated and without bail, for the two detainees, the father and the mother of the baby, and has opened a case for the crimes of homicide, child abandonment, and animal abuse. The judge has also ordered the suspension of parental authority of the parents, who have three other children.

The Mossos d’Esquadra found on Thursday the remains of the baby they had been searching for since last weekend in the home where the family lived, after the grandfather reported the disappearance. It so happens that in that same house, the Mossos rescued, between Friday and Saturday, 28 malnourished dogs in very poor hygienic conditions and found others dead. The baby’s parents were arrested on Wednesday morning by the National Police at the North station in Valencia, accused of homicide, and on Thursday they were brought before the court.

The police then took the couple to the house that was being inspected and where “human remains compatible with the search” for the baby were finally found. The couple, who had four children—the baby and three other girls—had lived in Santa Bàrbara since 2019, having come from Castellón.

The discovery of the baby’s remains has been “an outcome that no one could have expected,” lamented the town’s mayor, Josep Lluís Gimeno, who commented that the mother is from the town and the father is Valencian. The Santa Bàrbara Town Hall has decreed two days of mourning, Friday and Saturday, and this afternoon the neighbors observed an emotional minute of silence in memory of the baby.
