The Popular Party has filed a new request for the appearance of ministers Fernando Grande-Marlaska (Interior), Margarita Robles (Defense), and José Manuel Albares (Foreign Affairs) in the Senate to provide explanations for the Ceuta crisis. The party led by Alberto Núñez Feijóo thus intensifies its offensive in the upper chamber, where it holds an absolute majority, and once again attempts the appearance of the ministers in the respective committees of their portfolios after they did not attend in August.

The spokesperson for the Popular Parliamentary Group in the Senate, Alicia García, stated in a statement issued this Saturday that the absence of Marlaska, Robles, and Albares in August was “an unprecedented and unique event in our democracy.” The no-show by the Government members sparked a flurry of accusations and reproaches which, after the respective committees were held without them, ended with the PP taking the matter to the Supreme Court. The high court, however, rejected their request to force the appearances.
In this new attempt, the Popular Party claims that Albares, head of Foreign Affairs, must “be held accountable for the coordination maintained with Morocco regarding the invasion of Ceuta and for the actions and commitments reached between both countries to address its consequences.” Marlaska and Robles, for their part, must “face national sovereignty for their contradictions, for the security reports that have become known, and for the lack of security that all Ceutans suffer daily.”
Throughout the entire legislature, the PP has articulated much of its opposition through the Senate, where it enjoys an absolute majority, and particularly through its investigative committees, of which it has created up to seven on all kinds of issues. There it has also censured members of the Council of Ministers on several occasions. It remains to be seen, although it seems unlikely, whether this new attempt will end in the ministers’ appearance. Albares, Robles, and Marlaska attended the government control session in the Senate on Tuesday, where they answered questions from Popular senators, among others.
