The war for the succession of Nuevas Generaciones breaks out: Ayuso’s protégé will fight against a continuity candidate

Messages of support for one side or the other are already pouring in on social media. On one side, the supporters of Ignacio Dancausa, leader of Nuevas Generaciones of Madrid and protégé of the Community president, Isabel Díaz Ayuso. On the other, the backers of Antonio Landáburu, head of Nuevas Generaciones of Murcia, and a continuation candidate with the current executive led by Beatriz Fanjul. The president of the youth organization of the PP since 2011 and Basque deputy will leave the position next July 11. Génova decided to call the NN GG congress for that date, and the fight for succession has broken out in a battle between two models: the young people of the PP will thus experience a mirror of the eternal debate of the Popular Party about “the Ayuso way” against the more moderate ones.

Fanjul will leave the presidency after five years at the helm of an institution that last March experienced a turbulent crisis with the resignation of Carlo G. Angrisano — until then secretary general — who also asked for votes for Vox. Last Wednesday, two days after Génova set the date for Fanjul’s replacement, the leader of NN GG of the Community of Madrid announced that he is running to preside over the national structure. Very close to the Madrid president, nicknamed among the young popular ranks as the “mini-Ayuso,” Dancausa (25 years old) is one of the figures with the toughest and most media-friendly stances among the members. His aspirations emerge amid the open debate within the party about the Moreno way or the Ayuso way after the loss of the absolute majority in Andalusia. He is close to the ultra agitator Vito Quiles, and his leadership at the head of the party would mean for the Community president the possibility of controlling the party’s young members.

The young people of the popular ranks held a board meeting this Monday to formally call the congress on the 11th. And, just a few hours later, another candidate announced that he is running for the presidency. A deputy in the Murcia Assembly, close to the Murcian president, Fernando López Miras, and councilor in Águilas, Antonio Landáburu (29 years old), has registered to compete with Dancausa for the leadership of the youth organization. “In Murcia we are calm people,” say sources from the Murcian PP in contrast to Ayuso’s style. And, therefore, to the ways of her protégé Dancausa. Landáburu is a very active figure within the organization and “has the support of the outgoing executive,” add other sources from Nuevas Generaciones.

Thus, it is expected that at least two candidates will face off in primaries unless more aspirants appear or Génova tries a joint list, something that is ruled out because Dancausa had been preparing the leadership race for some time. Ayuso’s protégé, with whom he also shares all the cultural war flags, has the full support of Madrid but is also very strong in Aragón and Catalonia. Since Landáburu announced he is taking the step, the leader of NN GG of Madrid has been reposting on social media publications against the Murcian figure. Landáburu, for now, has only published a message announcing his candidacy explaining why he is taking the step. And he accumulates supporters in part of Andalusia and in the Valencian Community, in addition to Murcian support.

The loss of the absolute majority in Andalusia has reopened the strategic debate in the PP about the Moreno way or the Ayuso way, with the moderates weakened. And the youth structure also enters that discussion, which if opting for Dancausa would mean the second option. The issue also arises when Vox has managed to capitalize a good part of the young vote, especially on the right. According to the latest 40dB. survey for EL PAÍS and SER, Santiago Abascal’s formation is the preferred party of 18 to 24-year-olds (24%). While up to 44, it beats the Popular Party in all age groups. “Dancausa has more capacity to attract that electorate than Landáburu,” argue sources from NN GG supporting the Madrilenian.

In Nuevas Generaciones of the Popular Party, one can join at 16 years old and stay up to 30 (inclusive). At 31, the popular cachorros move to the general pool of PP affiliates.
