Marc Márquez triumphs at the Aragon GP and is now closing in on Jorgen Martín’s MotoGP lead
The seven-time world champion achieves his fourth victory of the season ahead of Acosta and Bezzecchi to reduce the gap to the World Championship leader to 19 points
Guille Álvarez, Alcañiz, 30-08-2026 – The competition was fierce and daring, but Motorland remains Marc Márquez’s territory. The seven-time world champion secured his fourth win of the season this Sunday and the coveted double at the Aragon GP, where he was able to fend off his rivals’ attacks in the early stages of the race to break away and finish unchallenged at the finish line. Pedro Acosta, one of the talents expected to succeed him as the star of the championship, tried to unsettle him without success, and Marco Bezzecchi did the same from pole position by attempting to escape at the front in the opening laps. Ultimately, the ’93’ imposed his will with another dual display, first managing his tires and then unleashing his superior speed and better pace on a track where he has not lost in six races since joining Ducati in 2024.
The victory, with leader Jorge Martín finishing fifth and far off pace throughout the weekend, places him 19 points behind the championship leader. It’s no surprise he celebrated by pounding his chest with his fist fiercely and, once calmer, kneeling before his fans in the corner that bears his name on the circuit. “The key point was the first corner, but I made a huge mistake by not disengaging the rear device. I was very slow there, but then I tried to build a good rhythm and we had a great battle with Marco and Pedro. My plan was to manage at the start and then push to break away from lap 10,” Márquez analyzed, able to recover from the scare at the start, in parc fermé.
As he himself admitted, the race was anything but easy for the defending champion. At the start, he repeated Saturday’s strategy, did not fail, and managed to overtake poleman Bezzecchi at the first corner. But the rear device on his Desmosedici GP – which lowers the bike’s height to maximize acceleration at the start and on the straights – remained activated and caused him to scrape the asphalt at turn 2, sparks included. His main title rivals took advantage of the scare, first ‘Bez’ recovering the lead like a cannonball and then Martín placing the other official Aprilia in between at the third lean of the day.
Unyielding, Márquez quickly returned the favor. At the chicane before the back straight, he cut inside the championship leader, who then crashed heavily, unable to match the pace of the best at Motorland throughout the weekend to finish fifth, the same result as in Saturday’s sprint. On lap 6, the reigning champion made another decisive pass at the same spot, leaning to his preferred left side, to leave behind a Bezzecchi who did not back down later at 300 km/h on the thrilling descent to the corner before the finish line. In a last-ditch braking, almost touching both title contenders, Pedro Acosta took advantage of the Italian’s deceleration with a spectacular outside overtake.
The Murcian, again very commendable on a KTM clearly inferior to the Italian machines, was once more very close to claiming his first elite victory, which still eludes him after three seasons among the best with 14 podiums. Acosta stuck to the tail of the Motorland owner, who did not allow him to get inside at any moment and, just after the halfway point of the race, decided to pull away with two consecutive fastest laps, extending his lead to one second from lap 15 and finally leaving him almost two seconds behind at the checkered flag.
“I wanted to try. I’m happy because the team has worked very hard and, as I said in Silverstone, it seems we are on the right track. I hope to improve even more in Misano,” said the Spanish talent, who will share a garage with Márquez next year. Bezzecchi, despite his brilliant one-lap performance on Saturday to shatter the circuit record, finished more than three seconds behind the winner to close the podium, the three aces of the day far ahead of the rest, led by Alex Márquez who was fourth more than eight seconds behind his brother.
The World Championship, with 10 races over 14 weekends and 333 points still to be awarded, remains very close. Martín leads with 256 points, but Marc Márquez is now just 19 points behind and his teammate Bezzecchi is also within striking distance at 24 points. The defending champion had started the event 40 points behind and was at one point more than 100 points off the championship leader not long ago. In Aragon, he fulfilled his wishes despite physical discomfort in his injured right arm: achieving the double and leveraging his superiority on left-turn tracks to maximize his chances for an eighth MotoGP crown, the tenth in the world championship ladder.
With his victory, the great contemporary circuit dominator accumulates 37 wins out of 60 possible on counterclockwise tracks, and in Alcañiz he has stood atop the podium in eight of 12 appearances in the premier class. Márquez, since turning 30, has amassed 18 wins despite his injury ordeal, a figure that matches Valentino Rossi’s record, still far from the 33 once achieved by Australian Mick Doohan.
Marc Márquez once again presents himself as the man to beat. Especially on favorable tracks like the Alcañiz circuit. The Ducati rider, who still does not feel fully well after starting the year still limping from his last right shoulder operation, had to undergo one last surgery to regain better sensations and continue trusting his chances to defend the world champion title. And he is doing so while relying on his favorite circuits not to miss a single opportunity. Alcañiz is marked in red on his calendar. And he did not miss the chance. Despite a problem at the start, which he had to recover from in the first laps, with a last-ditch overtake on Bezzecchi on lap six that cemented his victory. Another one at the Aragon GP. And now eight in total. Another one to keep dreaming of the World Championship after the sprint win the day before. On the podium, he was accompanied by Pedro Acosta and Bezzecchi himself.
Marco Bezzecchi started from pole at MotorLand Aragon ready to challenge the dominance of the Márquez brothers this Sunday, especially Marc, who has won seven times in the premier class and also won the last two editions held on the Aragon track. But the Italian could not convert his great Saturday lap into a victory. The win went to the world champion, who is getting closer every day, clawing points weekend after weekend, to the lead still held by Jorge Martín. Márquez leaves Alcañiz just 19 points behind the Madrid rider. A gap easily absorbed in one more event.
Bezzecchi came in second in the overall standings, 29 points behind Martín, while Marc Márquez was 33 points off the top. Now, their positions in the general classification are reversed, and Márquez will leave the Aragon GP in second place.

PEDRO ACOSTA, A REGULAR ON THE MOTORLAND PODIUM. The KTM rider, starting today in 6th place, has finished on the podium in two of his last three appearances at the MotorLand Aragon circuit across all categories (victory in 2022 in Moto2 and 3rd in 2024 in MotoGP), finishing 4th last year.
JORGE MARTÍN, IMPROVING IN ARAGON. The San Sebastián de los Reyes rider has scored points in all three of his MotoGP appearances at MotorLand Aragon, always improving his position until finishing 2nd in 2024.
As we said, Jorge Martín is the MotoGP leader with 245 points, 29 more than Marco Bezzecchi and 33 more than Marc Márquez.
ALEX MÁRQUEZ, GOOD RESULTS IN SPAIN. The Cervera rider has won three of his last MotoGP races held in Spain after not winning any of his first 22.

Marco Bezzecchi, however, is the rider starting from pole today, his third this season. The Italian rider has not won since the Brazilian Grand Prix, the second of the current season.
Marc Márquez has finished on the podium in 31 of his 45 MotoGP races held on Spanish circuits (89%), including 14 wins.
Marc Márquez (Ducati) has also won the last two editions of the Aragon MotoGP Grand Prix (2024 and 2025) and only he has managed to string together at least three consecutive wins in this race (four between 2016 and 2019).
