Claudia Sheinbaum’s first summit in Europe is full of symbolism. The president of Mexico is participating in a progressive summit in Barcelona, Spain, where she will be able to mingle with other regional leaders such as Brazilian president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and his Colombian counterpart, Gustavo Petro. Invited by the host president, Pedro Sánchez, Sheinbaum’s arrival also marks the end of more than seven years of harsh rhetoric between Spain and Mexico. Relations between the two nations were strained by the narrative of former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who demanded that the Crown apologize for the abuses committed by the Spanish in America during the decades of the Conquest. The path to thawing was facilitated by a series of nuances and statements from Spanish government officials and Felipe VI.
