Best roll-top backpack
Despite how practical a backpack can be for everyday use, we don’t always carry the same amount of items inside it. When the load is light, some models can feel too large. Fortunately, with the best roll-top backpacks, it is possible to adjust the size according to the number of items inside, so their practicality changes according to the needs of each moment. At EL PAÍS Escaparate we have tested four designs to choose the most suitable for school or office.
Which roll-top backpacks have we chosen and how have we tested them?
Since the comparison is designed to find the best roll-top backpack for school or office, the capacity to carry a large laptop was one of the main concerns during our tests. That is why we chose models with good maximum capacity and that, if possible, protected equipment and other belongings from rain that might surprise us in the city. In this regard, the four selected models are: Lekeinchi, Travelite, Johnny Urban, and Tan.Tomi.
To test these roll-top backpacks, we used them for several days during daily commutes, carrying a 15-inch, 3-kilogram laptop, a food container, and a 750-milliliter bottle. During the tests, we evaluated the material durability and how the design helps distribute the load when the backpack is full. We also analyzed their actual capacity and internal organization to check if items are well accommodated and protected.
Additionally, we paid attention to the roll-top closure system, both for its ease of use and the security it offers against accidental or unwanted openings. Finally, we evaluated the comfort of the straps and back support, especially when carrying weight for several hours.
Why can you trust me?
I am a journalist specialized in product analysis and, in recent years, I have tested and compared dozens of devices and accessories for media such as El País. My way of evaluating starts from something very specific: understanding what a product really offers in relation to its cost. Not only in punctual tests but also in everyday use, because that is where the details that make a difference are perceived. Beyond specifications, I am interested in how it performs in practice, how consistent it is over time, and what limitations appear when you integrate it into your routine. Because, in the end, a good product is not the flashiest but the one that best justifies its price day to day. That is the criterion with which I build each recommendation.
Which roll-top backpack was the winner?
I practically liked all the features of the Lekeinchi roll-top backpack, which is why I chose it as the best in this comparison. Despite carrying a lot of weight, it remains comfortable, while its closure system is very practical and secure.

How practical is this roll-top backpack?
In a backpack, comfort is very important to avoid getting tired or ending up with back and shoulder pain. That is the main reason I chose the Lekeinchi roll-top backpack as the best in the comparison. It is true that when carrying a large laptop (15 inches), the weight is inevitably felt. Still, thanks to its padded handles, the load sensation did not bother me at all due to the good weight distribution.
The build quality is another highlighted element of this backpack. In my opinion, all seams and zippers look very solid, so I think its durability is guaranteed. Additionally, it has a 25-liter capacity which, according to the brand, is more than enough to support the load of a laptop up to 17 inches. In my case, I tested carrying a 15-inch laptop in the main compartment and there was plenty of space, with the advantage that it felt well protected during transport.
A good backpack, in my opinion, should have enough compartments to properly organize all belongings. In this regard, the winning model in the comparison performs very well, as it has a large padded pocket for the laptop — no need to carry it protected in an additional case — as well as a small zippered pocket for small items like keys and wallet.
It also does not matter if the backpack is too full, because its zippers are very resistant and complemented by the main buckle for a completely secure closure. There is no doubt that its fabric is waterproof, as I was able to verify on a rainy day that the interior remained dry. Finally, I want to highlight that its blue color looks very versatile for carrying to school, office, or work travel with enough comfort and practicality.
Why do we recommend it?
The best:
- It is very comfortable, even with the weight of a large laptop.
- It has very good quality seams and zippers.
- It has several compartments.
- Its waterproof fabric.
To improve:
- It cannot stand on its own.
Other alternatives to the best roll-top backpack
Travelite roll-top backpack
The Travelite roll-top backpack is also an excellent option for most people. Its materials and construction are of great quality, but details like the lack of a padded laptop pocket or needing both hands to open and close it place it in second place.

How practical is this roll-top backpack?
What I liked most about the Travelite roll-top backpack is that it is very light and comfortable to carry my things. It even feels light when carrying a large laptop, something I did not experience even with the winning model. However, what makes me place it second is that it does not have a specific — padded, as usual — pocket to carry the computer protected. This can be solved with a case, but that represents an extra that not all models have.
Its 19-liter capacity seemed more than enough for general daily use for both school and work. I also found it very positive that it is waterproof, as on a rainy day I was able to confirm that the interior remained intact. The roll-top closure system is not difficult to use and its buckle closure seemed to offer enough security, even to prevent someone from opening the backpack behind our backs.
The part I liked least about this backpack is that its white color is very susceptible to getting dirty quickly with use. Therefore, I would recommend choosing a dark tone to avoid this inconvenience. Otherwise, its padded straps were comfortable and its various pockets are also very functional for daily use.
Why do we recommend it?
The best:
- It feels light, even carrying a large laptop.
- Waterproof fabric.
- Equipped with a secure closure system.
To improve:
- It does not have a padded pocket for the computer.
- The white model gets dirty easily.
Johnny Urban roll-top backpack
Since I started testing, the seams of the Johnny Urban roll-top backpack already showed wear and began to fray. It also does not have enough space for a large laptop, is not waterproof, and its pockets are difficult to access.

How practical is this roll-top backpack?
Although being made, according to the brand, with recycled plastic makes this Johnny Urban roll-top backpack seem attractive at first, the truth is that after a few days of use, the seams began to show imperfections and loose threads. It is also true that, by itself, it is light, but it becomes uncomfortable as soon as a large laptop is loaded.
This, moreover, not only affects the load the backpack itself supports — without distributing the weight properly on the body — but also makes the main compartment very tight and difficult to close. In fact, when I filled the backpack, I noticed how access to the pockets became very complicated and uncomfortable. I also found that the straps could only be adjusted when wearing the backpack, which I found not very ergonomic.
Compared to the two backpacks analyzed above, this model also has the disadvantage of not being waterproof. In light moisture conditions, it can keep belongings protected, but it cannot withstand rain. So, overall, I do not consider it a good choice for constant use in the city.
Why do we recommend it?
The best:
- It is a light backpack.
- It is made of recycled plastic.
To improve:
- The seams show wear after a few days.
- It does not distribute weight well when carrying a large laptop.
- It is not waterproof.
Tan.Tomi roll-top school backpack
Overall, the Tan.Tomi roll-top backpack is quite convincing in most of its features, especially regarding fabric quality and available compartments. However, overall there are better options in this comparison.

How practical is this roll-top backpack?
Few disadvantages can be found in the Tan.Tomi roll-top backpack compared to the other models in the comparison. Its size is quite generous, more than enough to carry a laptop up to 15.6 inches, and it has several internal compartments to organize belongings comfortably. It is worth noting that it has hidden anti-theft pockets and its fabric can resist cuts.
The zippers also seemed resistant, although the most notable is its polyester fabric, capable of resisting wear and water. When opening or closing it, I also found it easy to roll and unroll. Overall, I think it is a very good choice for travel or outdoor activities. Despite everything, I find it a less complete backpack overall compared to the other models in the comparison.
Why do we recommend it?
The best:
- Water-resistant polyester.
- Multiple compartments and space for a laptop.
To improve:
- Less complete overall than the other models.
