The Police have made three new arrests in the case of the singer Matías de Paula’s murder, bringing the total number of people detained for this homicide committed last Friday in Villanueva de la Serena (Badajoz, 25,773 inhabitants) to six. The last three involved are considered accomplices to the crime, according to sources familiar with the investigation. The Government delegate in Extremadura, José Luis Quintana Álvarez, stated today that they are expected to appear before the court this Friday.

Among the six arrested is the alleged perpetrator of Matías de Paula’s death. He is a man, with the initials F.S., who supposedly summoned the victim on May 15 in Rafael Alberti square in the town of Badajoz and ended up killing him by shooting. Police sources link this fatal attack to a case of jealousy for sentimental reasons.
Matías Corraliza Fernández, the victim’s real name, died at the scene, while the shooter and others accompanying him fled in a vehicle.
The main suspect was arrested this Tuesday. His arrest took place in the town of Magacela, about 13 kilometers from Villanueva de la Serena. That same day, before his arrest, F.S. stabbed a taxi driver, unrelated to the case, and fled. He was captured in an operation by the National Police and Civil Guard, as the area where he was being sought falls under the jurisdiction of the latter police force.

On Wednesday, two other men were arrested, of whom only it is known that they are relatives of F.S., and in the last few hours, three more have been arrested. So far, very few details of the investigation and operations are known because the case is under judicial secrecy.
One of the main hypotheses of the crime is the jealousy that the alleged shooter had over the relationship between his ex-wife and the singer Matías de Paula, according to police sources. The main suspect, with a police record for gender violence, had been released from prison a few days ago. A spokesperson for the deceased’s family explained on Monday on the Antena 3 program Espejo Público that Matías de Paula had had a relationship with the woman “as teenagers,” when they were 14 or 15 years old, and that she had tried to reestablish contact with the singer by writing to him through social networks.
Matías de Paula had settled in his hometown with his family after a career of more than two decades in the tablaos of Madrid and extensive experience worldwide as a singer of the National Dance School. He founded the flamenco club Diego El Chucarro, named after his father, also a singer, where he taught singing classes. He had been separated from his partner, mother of his two children aged 14 and 12, for a year. Those close to him highlight that he was “a good person,” “very loved,” and that he had never gotten into trouble.
