The Secretariat of the Navy has detained 13 alleged members of Los Chapitos on the highway connecting Mazatlán and Tepic, near the municipality of El Rosario, in southern Sinaloa. The federal agency reported this Saturday in a statement that the arrest occurred after “repelling an attack” by the faction of the sons of Joaquín El Chapo Guzmán. In the operation, they seized a dozen long guns, nearly 2,000 cartridges and 100 magazines, vests, and three “improvised” explosive devices. The state has been engulfed in a spiral of violence since September 2024, when a bloody war began between the two factions of the Sinaloa Cartel.

The Fourth Naval Region dealt a blow to Los Chapitos on Friday. During a patrol on the highway from Tepic, the capital of Nayarit, to Mazatlán, the state’s tourist jewel, the sailors were attacked “by local residents.” After containing the aggression, about which it has not been reported if there were any injured or deceased, the Secretariat of the Navy was able to arrest 13 people allegedly linked to organized crime.
In the first 18 months of Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration, the government has detained nearly 50,000 people accused of high-impact crimes. The April figures from the National Security Strategy, led by Secretary Omar García Harfuch, also included the seizure of more than 25,000 firearms and nearly 500 tons of drugs in a year and a half. These data coincide with a 40% drop in homicides in the country since Sheinbaum took office. According to information from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP), presented this Tuesday, from September 2024 to April this year, Mexico has had 34 fewer homicides each day.
