Sinaloa has a new governor. The northern State Congress has appointed Yeraldine Bonilla, until now Secretary of Government, as interim governor this Saturday. The number two of Rubén Rocha Moya, who requested a temporary leave on Friday, cornered after the United States Department of Justice accused him of having ties with the Sinaloa Cartel, will immediately assume the position of her former boss.

Bonilla takes the reins of the State at a moment of extreme stress. The morenista governor so far has decided to step aside while the Attorney General’s Office of the Republic (FGR) scrutinizes his administration and campaign, both stained by the U.S. accusation. This week, in an unprecedented event in the relations between Mexico and Washington, the Southern District of New York Prosecutor’s Office formally charged Rocha Moya with colluding with the Los Chapitos faction.
