The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, wanted to close the debate on the call for elections from Rome on Wednesday, assuring that there will be no elections until next year, when they are due, but the PNV insists on its demand for an early election from all fronts. This was done on Wednesday by the former lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu through an article in this newspaper; the Basque party did so in the Senate by abstaining its group in a PP motion that called for the polls to be opened immediately alongside Junts; and the party leader, Aitor Esteban, repeated it again this Thursday, the first to stir the hornet’s nest last Sunday.

“I think the focus must be on the president and on the responsibility he has to ensure the proper governability of the institutions, given the situation, it seems to us that the legislature has come to an end,” Esteban emphasized in statements to the media in Bilbao. “The one responsible for making decisions under these circumstances is the president himself; it is not enough to say that the Constitution states that a legislature lasts four years. It also says, according to article 155, to dissolve the Chambers, and this is not the first time it has been done,” the PNV leader stressed.
For Esteban, the only option is for Sánchez to use the constitutional prerogative to dissolve Parliament and he rules out a motion of no confidence. “We do not consider it,” he reiterated, although the “general interest,” according to the PNV, is that elections be called now. On the other side, the Popular Party also does not want to move to contact the Basque party. However, Alberto Núñez Feijóo continues to send messages to the partners at every step he takes. This Thursday, the PP leader participated in an event in Leganés, where the Popular Party governs and the City Council has just undergone a vote of confidence, just a few hours after the ruling on the Leire case became known and after Pedro Sánchez reiterated that there will be no early election following the entry of the Central Operative Unit (UCO) into Ferraz.
Feijóo: “Abstaining is not enough”
The PP leader focused almost his entire speech on attacking Sánchez’s Government over the latest developments in the investigations. “No one can assure that there are corruption-free spaces in the Government. It is not the occasional appearance of rotten apples, when cases multiply, when investigations reach the gravitational center of the Government, what is rotten is the core of power,” Feijóo said.
“Yesterday’s raid was a raid on the entire sanchismo, not just a part, but the whole,” he added. And he increased the pressure on the partners, to whom he extends the responsibility that the “Government stinking of corruption” remains in power. The corrupt who have been governing us are not winning, they are losing. Our thanks, the Government of Spain is rotten, but Spanish democracy is not. “Those who support a Government without Budgets, without a majority and without decency in Parliament, stop doing so. There are no more options. The moment demands more than abstaining from the problem, we must work to solve it,” he told them just a few hours after Esteban, PNV leader, reiterated this Thursday that “the legislature” has “come to an end” and again demanded elections. “I will do everything possible to change the Government, and when I say everything, I mean everything,” he concluded. He also “thanked” the work of judges, prosecutors, and security forces. “The corrupt who have been governing us are not winning, they are losing. The Government of Spain is rotten, but Spanish democracy is not.”
