Lighting a barbecue at home is no longer what it used to be. In many apartments, especially in cities, charcoal is directly ruled out due to smoke, odors, or restrictions. In this context, electric barbecues have become a practical alternative, as they allow cooking meat, fish, or vegetables in a cleaner, faster, and more controlled way, even indoors or on balconies. That is why at EL PAÍS Escaparate we have tested four different models to find out which works best in everyday use.

Which electric barbecues have we chosen and how have we tested them?

To select the products for this comparison, we mainly considered power and, above all, the temperature control they offer, as this is where the greatest differences between models exist. We also took into account safety systems and their impact on daily use. Based on these considerations, the four electric barbecues we selected are: Cecotec, Jata, Severin, and Taurus.

During the tests, we checked the product condition upon receipt, its assembly, and compliance with electrical regulations. Then, we evaluated its real cooking performance, ease of use, cleaning, and durability, as well as customer service in case of issues.

Why can you trust me?

Alejandro Mendoza

I am a journalist specialized in product analysis and, in recent years, I have tested and compared dozens of devices and accessories for media such as El País. My way of evaluating starts from something very specific: understanding what a product really offers in relation to its cost. Not only in specific tests but also in everyday use, because that is where the details that make a difference are perceived. Beyond the specifications, I am interested in how it performs in practice, how consistent it is over time, and what limitations appear when you integrate it into your routine. Because, in the end, a good product is not the most eye-catching, but the one that best justifies its price day to day. That is the criterion with which I build each recommendation.

What is the best electric barbecue?

With 2,000 W and a non-stick cast aluminum plate, the Cecotec Perfect Country 2000 EasyMove electric barbecue has been my favorite. It also has a mixed grill and griddle surface and a five-level thermostat. It stands out for its even heat distribution, large cooking surface, and ease of cleaning, as well as incorporating wheels and side supports for greater convenience.

How does it cook?

What convinced me most about the Cecotec Perfect Country 2000 EasyMove electric barbecue during the tests was how homogeneous the cooking is across its entire surface. This is largely due to its dual heating element technology and the cast aluminum plate, which distributes heat evenly. In practice, this translates into evenly cooked meats and vegetables that are not undercooked depending on the grill area.

Additionally, its versatility is notable. The combination of grill and griddle allows cooking from large pieces of meat to more delicate foods like fish or even eggs. Added to this is the hinged lid, which works similarly to a convection oven and helps retain heat, further improving cooking. The five-level thermostat also provides quite precise control, something I especially appreciated when adjusting different cooking points.

In daily use, it also makes a difference due to its design. The large surface allows cooking several portions at once, while the wheels and side supports facilitate both transport and organization. Cleaning is also easy thanks to the removable dishwasher-safe plate. On the downside, its price is higher than the others and it does not incorporate particularly notable safety features; still, it is the most complete overall experience.

Why do we recommend it?

The best:

  • 2,000 W power.
  • Adjustable five-level thermostat.
  • Two heating elements.
  • Cast aluminum and non-stick plate.
  • Quick and easy assembly.
  • Wheels for easy movement.
  • Lower tray to collect grease.
  • Lower storage tray.
  • Easy to clean.

To improve:

  • High price.
  • No clear safety functions.

Other alternatives to the best electric barbecue

Smoke-free electric barbecue Jata BQ95

What I liked about the Jata BQ95 electric barbecue is its 2,000 W power with a stainless steel grill and a water tray system to reduce smoke. However, although it allows height adjustment in two levels, it does not offer temperature control.

How does it cook?

During the tests, what caught my attention most about the Jata BQ95 electric barbecue was how quickly it is ready to start cooking. Its power and design make it reach temperature quickly, which is very practical for daily or impromptu use. Also, the water tray helps reduce smoke and keep food juicy, which is especially noticeable when cooking meat.

However, its main limitation is clear: it does not allow temperature regulation, only grill height adjustment. This reduces control over cooking, especially for more delicate foods. In practice, it requires more attention to the process and limits precision compared to other models.

Still, it is a very functional option for indoors. It is easy to disassemble, clean, and maintain, and its size is suitable for preparing several portions without complications. However, it is not designed for outdoor use and lacks notable safety features, which leaves it a step behind the most complete option.

Why do we recommend it?

The best:

  • 2,000 W power.
  • Two heating elements.
  • Stainless steel grill.
  • Lower tray to collect grease.
  • Easy to clean.

To improve:

  • No temperature control, only height.
  • No clear safety functions.
  • Not suitable for outdoor use.

Severin PG 8567 tabletop barbecue

Undoubtedly, the 2,200 W power with adjustable thermostat, SafeTouch casing, and automatic shut-off of the Severin PG 8567 electric barbecue are its strongest points. The problem is that it does not stand out in performance or power compared to the other models.

How does it cook?

In this case, I found a balanced model, without major flaws but also without a particularly distinctive point. The thermostat of the Severin PG 8567 electric barbecue allows precise temperature regulation, which makes it easier to adapt cooking according to the food. Also, the SafeTouch casing and automatic shut-off provide an extra safety feature appreciated in daily use.

Cooking performance is adequate. It heats well and maintains a stable temperature, allowing good results with both meat and vegetables. However, with only one heating element, it does not reach the uniformity level of more advanced models, which is noticeable in certain grill areas.

Where it does perform well is in the overall experience: it is easy to clean, manageable, and works both indoors and outdoors. Still, it does not particularly stand out in any key area — it is neither the fastest nor the most powerful — so it remains a solid but less competitive option compared to the best.

Why do we recommend it?

The best:

  • 2,200 W power.
  • Rotary control to regulate temperature.
  • Automatic shut-off and SafeTouch casing.
  • Stainless steel grill.
  • Lower tray to collect grease.
  • Easy to clean.

To improve:

  • Only one heating element.
  • Not the fastest or most powerful.

Taurus Maxim’s electric barbecue

Despite its 2,400 W power, the Taurus Maxim’s electric barbecue was the slowest to heat up. The good news is that it has an adjustable thermostat and safety features such as cool-touch handles.

How does it cook?

What convinced me least about the Taurus Maxim’s electric barbecue is that, despite its high power, it takes longer to heat up than the others. In practice, this directly affects the experience, as it requires waiting longer before starting to cook and reduces the overall efficiency feeling.

From there, it performs adequately. It offers a good surface to cook several portions, the thermostat allows temperature adjustment, and safety features — such as cool-touch handles — provide peace of mind in use. Also, the water tray helps reduce smoke, making it suitable for indoors.

However, that lack of speed penalizes a key aspect in this type of product. Although it is complete in features and functional in daily use, it does not quite match the performance of the better-positioned models, so it remains a correct alternative but less recommendable overall.

Why do we recommend it?

The best:

  • 2,400 W power.
  • Adjustable thermostat.
  • Cool-touch handles.
  • Stainless steel grill.
  • Lower tray to collect grease.
  • Easy to clean.

To improve:

  • Heats slower than the others.

Frequently asked questions about electric barbecues

Is it legal to have barbecues at home?

The legality of this activity in the domestic sphere mainly depends on the rules of the homeowners’ association and local municipal ordinances. Generally, the use of an electric barbecue on terraces or balconies is lawful, since it does not generate flames or bothersome smoke from wood combustion. However, building statutes may prohibit these practices if vapors interfere with the well-being of other neighbors. During drought periods or high fire risk, some regions of Spain restrict outdoor fire use, in which case electric models stand out as the only allowed alternative thanks to their thermal safety.

What type of barbecue is healthier?

From a nutritional perspective, the electric barbecue represents the healthiest option for regular consumption. Without charcoal or wood, the cooking process does not produce polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, harmful substances that usually adhere to food on traditional grills. These devices allow exact temperature control, which prevents fiber carbonization and better preserves nutrients in meats or vegetables. Additionally, most of these units include drip trays that collect excess fat, ensuring a lighter and more digestible caloric intake for the user.

How recommendable is an electric grill?

Purchasing an electric barbecue is highly advisable for residents of urban areas with limited space. Its main virtue lies in immediacy; just plug the cable into the power outlet to reach the optimal heat point in minutes. The absence of ashes and residues facilitates quick cleaning afterward, something unthinkable in solid fuel models. Although the flavor differs slightly from classic smoked taste, the versatility of use inside the kitchen or on a small porch compensates for this difference. In short, it is a functional, safe, and efficient tool for those who want to enjoy a barbecue without the complications of traditional maintenance.
