The exhibition ‘Moments’, which celebrates the 50 years of EL PAÍS, begins its tour through Spain

50 images, 50 stories. The EL PAÍS exhibition celebrating the newspaper’s half-century of life has started its traveling tour at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport. Moments is curated by Marisa Flórez (León, 1948), photographer and former graphic editor of the newspaper, and its proposal evokes the fundamental role of photojournalism through 50 transcendental snapshots since EL PAÍS was born on May 4, 1976. From June 2 to 30, the exhibition will be at the Madrid airport, in the south area of Room 10 (baggage claim) of Terminal 4. Afterwards, it will continue through other cities such as Vigo, Gijón, or Bilbao.

There are all kinds of photographs, from portraits, pure photojournalism images capturing an important historical moment, to snapshots showing the beauty of an instant. A photo of Berliners hammering the Berlin Wall in 1989; an athlete jumping from the diving board at the Montjuïc pools during the Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992; Pedro Almodóvar and Penélope Cruz in a limousine in Los Angeles during the promotion of All About My Mother, with which the director won his first Oscar in 2000; or a plane with passengers about to crash into one of the Twin Towers in New York in 2001 are just some of the snapshots that can be enjoyed.

The 50 photographs are large format and below each one, on a pedestal, the title of the photo and its author are indicated. Additionally, it is possible to scan a QR code to obtain more information, with explanatory audios produced by Cadena SER. “Moments is nostalgia and horizon. It is not just a representation of life or a historical moment; it is life and history,” Flórez said about her proposal for EL PAÍS.

The exhibition was inaugurated last May 1 as part of the EL PAÍS Festival, the cultural event with which the newspaper shared its 50th anniversary with its readers and the public at Matadero Madrid, which gathered more than 40,000 visitors.
