The political balance offered by Pedro Sánchez this Tuesday at La Moncloa is at the opposite end of the bleak picture of the current legislature that Alberto Núñez Feijóo painted a week ago. The leader of the PP is traveling in Peru, where he is attending today the inauguration of Keiko Fujimori and strengthening ties with the Latin American right-wing parties, where Vox leads. In Lima, and in the hours before the institutional event, Feijóo held bilateral meetings with Fujimori; with the president of Chile, the ultra José Antonio Kast (a key partner of Santiago Abascal), and with the Ecuadorian leader, Daniel Noboa. In the absence of the opposition leader and after Sánchez had already appeared last Wednesday at the end of the term, it was the PP secretary general, Miguel Tellado, who evaluated the speech of the head of government. “He has displayed frankly insulting triumphalism. He lives completely out of reality and immersed in a bubble of lies, privileges, and corruption,” he stated in a video produced by the PP and distributed to the media.

For the PP, the country is on the “countdown” to the next general elections and already positions Feijóo as the next president. The Popular Party thus predicts that this Tuesday was Sánchez’s “last end-of-term balance” at the Palacio de la Moncloa. “More and more alone on the street and in Parliament every day, and increasingly cornered in the courts. People don’t want him to make balances, they want him to confess, to say what he knows about his corruption and leave,” Tellado emphasized, insisting on the “national reconstruction” that his party intends to promote if Feijóo manages to be invested after the next elections, scheduled for next year. “More than ‘Delivering,’ his slogan should be ‘fleeing’ or ‘committing crimes.’ Fleeing from reality and committing crimes, his government and his party, as if there were no tomorrow,” Tellado concluded.
The Popular leader thus summarizes Sánchez’s intervention through the video distributed to the media, in which he again overlooked the climate change pact reiterated by the president. Instead, Tellado praises the regional and local governments of his party, also in their “role of opposition at the national level,” for working “alongside the neighbors who are suffering the most and alongside the public servants who are making great efforts to end this nightmare as soon as possible.” Because, focused on overcoming the emergency, the PP for now avoids explicitly rejecting the State’s offer “against the climate emergency” despite Sánchez’s continuous public appeals who, however, does not intend to call Feijóo for a meeting to address the fire crisis.
Feijóo travels to Lima
Feijóo has worked a lot this term on his presence in the European Union, something he did not usually do as president of the Xunta, where his focus was almost entirely on Latin America. A fixation he has maintained as opposition leader. This Monday he stepped into Lima for the second time for Fujimori’s inauguration, where he will share the stage with other very close ultra-conservative figures such as the president of Chile, José Antonio Kast, and that of Argentina, Javier Milei. Both very close to the Vox leader, Santiago Abascal. With Kast, a photograph was even taken after a bilateral meeting.
Because the PP has focused on the new right-wing governments in Latin America with which it wants to establish ties, concerned about Vox’s rise in the region. The problem is that, as in Spain, the far right is also advancing in Latin America and reducing the space for traditional conservatives.
Regarding a hypothetical entry into La Moncloa, in Génova they compare next week’s event in Peru with the mirror of their future international policy. “We will have a correct, cordial relationship with the leaders who govern there for the interests.” Along the same lines, at a press conference at the Génova headquarters this Monday, the PP’s Deputy Secretary for Institutional Regeneration, Cuca Gamarra, defended that Feijóo’s trip reflects “the PP’s commitment to democracy, freedom, and strengthening ties between Spain and the Ibero-American democracies.”
