A 74-year-old woman drowned this Sunday while bathing on a beach in Sant Feliu de Guíxols (Girona). According to the Civil Protection of the Generalitat, the woman died at noon on the Sant Pol beach in that town on the Costa Brava, where at that time there was a lifeguard service and the green flag was flying. Shortly after 2:00 p.m., a call was received on the emergency phone 112 warning that a woman was in trouble in the water in the area of Cala del Maset, near Sant Pol beach. A Maritime Rescue boat took the woman to shore, where the Medical Emergency System (SEM) paramedics performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation maneuvers unsuccessfully.

Three SEM units and various Mossos d’Esquadra patrols were mobilized. With this, there are already 16 fatalities on Catalan beaches since the start of the bathing season on June 15, although the number of deaths on beaches, pools, or inland waters since then rises to 30, according to Civil Protection data.
Civil Protection warns of the increase in deaths during the bathing season when emergency services have received more than 2,000 calls and eight more people have died than in the same period last year. The Department of Health has also joined this call for responsibility and caution, especially with children and the elderly, after noting that high temperatures are bringing more bathers to the beaches and more accidents are being recorded.

Of the 16 people who died on the beaches, 12 were men and 4 women. By age, three were minors; four were between 18 and 64 years old and 10 were over 65 years old. Among the injured, four were critical; two serious and 16 less serious, and by age nine of the 22 were over 75 years old.
