The best outdoor surveillance camera
When talking about home security, the first thing that comes to mind is indoor surveillance cameras. However, limiting this protection only to the inside of the home is a mistake that more and more owners avoid. Thus, nowadays, outdoor surveillance cameras have become an indispensable device for those who also want to protect the surroundings of their home: the garden, the entrance of a chalet, a property, homes in rural areas…

Designed to withstand adverse weather conditions, they not only record what happens: they incorporate smart functions capable of detecting people, vehicles or suspicious movements, sending real-time alerts to the user’s mobile and allowing interaction through two-way audio. The goal is to offer active protection that deters intruders before they access the property and, at the same time, keeps owners informed of any incident, wherever they are.
How does an outdoor surveillance camera work?
Its operation is usually simple, especially models that operate via the home’s Wi-Fi connectivity. Through a mobile app, the user configures their device, defines detection zones, receives notifications and reviews recordings. Many of these cameras also incorporate storage via a microSD card and cloud options, ensuring the secure preservation of images.
How we chose and tested the products
To make this comparison, I selected five camera models that fall within a fairly wide price range, in order to adapt to different needs and budgets. Each was installed on the porch of a single-family home for a minimum period of one week to evaluate its performance in real-world conditions.
The aspects I considered in their respective analyses were the following:
- Design: referring to the quality of the materials and the camera’s finishes.
- Assembly and configuration: on one hand, I considered the device installation process and, on the other, the app through which it is configured within the home Wi-Fi network. Is this process simple and error-free?
- Recording quality: both in daytime and nighttime situations.
- Others: in the analysis of these cameras I also included key aspects such as overall performance —and whether there are cuts or interruptions—, the possibility of rotational movements, the incorporation of two-way audio, viewing angles, app functions and the reliability of the notification and alert system, among others.
Why can you trust me?
I have been in tech journalism for two decades. During this time, I have had the privilege of witnessing how technology advances to make everyday life easier and have been able to report it in various media. Although I have lost count of how many products have passed through my hands, I confess that the enthusiasm and feelings remain the same. Laptops, tablets, phones, cameras, activity trackers, smartwatches… I set no limits when choosing a device and make the most of its possibilities as a good technology consumer.
1- 6700 mAh battery: eufy Security eufyCam C37

Who is it for: if you are looking for an affordable surveillance camera, with good results and the peace of mind of storing your recordings without relying on subscription services.
Why we chose it: it is part of that group of outdoor surveillance cameras that come with a solar panel independent of the device: this makes it easier to aim the lens at the exact area you want to monitor and place the panel where it receives the most sunlight. On the other hand, although it is among the most economical options in the comparison, it has a good finish and has received the IP65 certification against dust and water. The assembly did not seem really complicated to me and, following the instructions, I took less time than I initially estimated.
To control it, I installed the eufy Security app on my mobile phone, which more than covers the needs of the home user: you can connect live, check battery level, adjust motion detection parameters, receive notifications, access event history…
Another aspect I liked most is its ability to move and follow the ‘action’ by combining motorized rotation with its artificial intelligence functions. During tests, when using it with people entering through the door, the automatic tracking responded quite naturally and managed to keep the frame for much of the route. Also, intelligent detection adds extra utility and security to the alert system because it differentiates between people, vehicles and pets, reducing irrelevant notifications. Its 2K resolution offers a sufficient level of detail to identify faces and appreciate small elements of the scene during the day. At night, its LED spotlight helps you get color images, improving identification level.
Its weak points: nothing important to highlight.

2- 5W solar panel: outdoor surveillance camera Ezviz CB8 lite kit

Who is it for: users interested in outdoor surveillance cameras that combine an efficient solar panel and a balanced set of features.
Why we chose it: it effectively fulfills what it promises. The first thing that caught my attention is its wireless design: it works with a battery powered by a solar panel with a textured surface that makes better use of sunlight than I expected. Also, I liked that this panel includes a 360º rotating mount and a three-meter cable, which gives you a lot of freedom to place it where it receives the most light.
I asked my partner to help me with the installation and in about 20 minutes we had everything ready. The next step was to install the Ezviz app which, thanks to its practical step-by-step assistant, allowed me to connect the camera to the home Wi-Fi without problems. From the mobile I could review the live image, zoom, talk to whoever was on the other side through the built-in microphone and speaker and even activate the siren and strobe lights to simulate an intrusion warning with a real deterrent effect.
I was also surprised by the image quality that helps identify people, vehicles and other objects easily. During my tests I rotated the camera practically in all directions thanks to its 340° horizontal and 80° vertical panoramic range, which really minimizes possible blind spots. The color night vision also impressed me: even with little light, the integrated floodlights provide good visibility.
Its weak points: to use the EZVIZ CloudPlay storage service you have to subscribe (the user has access to a free trial for one month).

3- With zone alert function: outdoor surveillance camera Netatmo NOC-S-AMZ

Who is it for: for those looking for a wired model that stands out for its high-quality finish and a powerful lighting system.
Why we chose it: it is aimed at users looking for an outdoor surveillance camera with advanced features. For example, its alert zones function —available in the Home + Security app— allowed me to define which areas I wanted to monitor and also choose whether I wanted to receive alerts only for people, vehicles or animals. During my tests I configured the main entrance and porch as active zones, ‘leaving out’ the sidewalk where people pass by. Thanks to this, the alerts were much more useful: I only received notifications when someone entered those ‘zones’, like a delivery person with a package, while pedestrians passing outside were ‘ignored’.
The camera sensor offers a sharp image, suitable for distinguishing faces or small details during the day. At night, the integrated LED spotlight is especially noticeable: the light not only illuminates the area but improves color visibility, so objects and people are shown in more detail than using only infrared. This infrared mode, as soon as night falls, ensures a stable image.
Regarding the siren, it is powerful and effective as a deterrent. During a daytime test, I activated the alarm and spotlight when a friend approached the porch: the 105 dB sound and light made him stop immediately.
Its weak points: being a wired outdoor surveillance camera, the installation process is much more complex than in a wireless model or those that work with a solar panel. For example, you have to make sure the power cables are properly connected and secured. Wi-Fi connectivity is improvable. It does not have two-way communication.

Application: Home + Security.
Others: compatible with Alexa, Google Assistant and Apple HomeKit, 105 dB alarm, spotlight system (12W) with manual activation via the app or automatic on, microSD storage up to 32 GB, optional saving on Dropbox or FTP, differentiates between people, animals, vehicles or common movements.
4- Imposing: outdoor surveillance camera Reolink Elite Floodlight Wi-Fi

Who is it for: to consider if you want a high-end camera that is large and offers powerful lighting as well as advanced smart features.
Why we chose it: the first thing that caught my attention are its two articulated LED floodlights that occupy a large part of the structure and offer very powerful lighting: since its 3,000 lumens are adjustable according to our needs, this makes it a flexible solution for any environment.

Another of its strengths is the 180º panoramic view. In this case, its two 4K lenses merge the captured images into one, which gives the feeling of not missing anything and almost completely reduces blind spots. Added to this is the image quality, which remains sharp not only during the day but at night, and the intelligent detection functions capable of differentiating people, vehicles and animals. As in the Netatmo and Tapo models, you have the option to set alert zones to customize which places to monitor more closely.
It also debuts an AI search function that allows you to find video clips just by typing what you are looking for, for example, ‘white car’. The idea is good because it saves us time compared to the tedious task of reviewing complete recordings. However, in practice the results are still a bit uneven: it works well with general categories like people or vehicles, but fails with more specific actions or descriptions. In any case, it is a promising function that will surely be perfected with future updates.
Its weak points: its installation is more complex than simple wireless models. It requires a connection to the home electrical network, so if you do not have basic electrical knowledge you will need to call a professional. The quality of some accessories, such as the screws it comes with, is not the best, it is preferable to replace them with more resistant ones.

Others: dual-band Wi-Fi, adjustable 3,000 lumens lighting, adjustable color temperature and AI video search (Beta function), 105 dB siren, personalized voice alerts, microSD card up to 512 GB, intrusion alert to zone, compatible with Google Assistant, infrared night vision up to 30 meters, two-way audio.
5- The most economical: outdoor surveillance camera Tapo Solar Powered (C410)

Who is it for: a suitable proposal for those who want to protect their home with an affordable solution, without giving up a quality user experience
Why we chose it: I love its cylindrical and minimalist design, with a matte white body that gives it a modern and discreet look. Also, its compact size allows it to be integrated into the space you choose without drawing too much attention; and since it is completely wireless, you will not need to do construction work or depend on a nearby power outlet. Just decide on a place that receives enough direct sunlight to power its panel.
According to its technical specifications sheet, 45 minutes of direct sunlight ensures a full day of operation, and in my tests its internal 6,400 mAh battery stayed between 70% and 75%. I was able to check this information through the Tapo app. However, it can operate without it because the (rechargeable) battery can operate autonomously for up to 180 days according to the manufacturer.
If the installation stands out for its simplicity, I also had no problems with its setup and commissioning. Considering it is the most economical option of all, I was surprised by its level of detail and sharpness. Also, it covers quite wide areas, and in low light conditions visibility is maintained without problems thanks to its two LED floodlights and integrated night vision.
Its weak points: The Tapo Care cloud storage services require a subscription. The system that identifies between people, pets and vehicles sometimes does not correctly distinguish between them.
Technical sheet
---
Resolution: 2,304 × 1,296 pixels.
Certification: IP65.
Application: Tapo.
Others: supports microSD cards up to 512 GB, identifies people, pets and vehicles, customizable activity zone, compatible with Alexa and Google Home, color night vision, two-way noise-cancelling sound, two floodlights.
6- ‘Made in France’: outdoor surveillance camera Konyks Camini Air 2 Solar

Who is it for: if you are looking for a device powered by a solar panel that also boasts a large capacity battery as backup so the camera does not turn off when there is not enough sun, look!
Why we chose it: it is part of the outdoor surveillance cameras that, in addition to working through a battery, include a solar panel. While using it I noticed how this accessory gives you great flexibility during installation, as it allows you to place it in places far from any outlet and without worrying about visible wiring. The experience with this panel has been very positive: I kept the battery charged constantly, even on days when sunlight was less intense.
With a compact design, I configured and commissioned it through the Konyks app, a simple and quite fast process. Although it does not have advanced technologies typical of more sophisticated cameras, this does not detract from its value because it works reliably: motion detection responds well, two-way audio allows you to communicate without difficulties in most situations and if you want to activate its siren, it gives you the peace of mind of knowing the deterrent effect is present.
The viewing angle is adequate. Personally, I liked the quality and level of sharpness and detail of the images more during the day than at night, although this does not mean the night experience is negative.
Its weak points: its cloud storage service is paid. The navigation through its app menus is the one I liked least and felt least comfortable with.
