On the night of this Wednesday, the Civil Guard and the National Police surrounded the man who hours earlier had murdered his ex-partner in a shopping center in Murcia and had fled. After midnight, agents of the Armed Institute arrested him in Puerto Lumbreras, about 90 kilometers southwest of the capital, heading towards Almería, according to Cadena Ser. The man under investigation had an active restraining order: he had been convicted on April 15, 2026, by the magistrate of court number 1 of the Violence Against Women Section of the Murcia Court of First Instance as the perpetrator of a crime of domestic abuse committed against his ex-partner, with whom he had a daughter under five years old in common.
The magistrate of court number 2 of the Instruction Section of the Murcia Court of First Instance, on duty, had issued hours earlier a warrant ordering the search and arrest of this man as the alleged perpetrator of a crime of homicide and breach of sentence. She has provisionally assigned custody of the girl to the public entity responsible for child protection in the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia to adopt the necessary protective measures.
The sentence by which he was convicted just three months ago was by agreement, and it imposed, among other penalties, the prohibition to approach the victim to less than 500 meters, from her home, workplace, or any other place where she was, as well as the prohibition to communicate with her by any means for 16 months, in addition to 40 days of community service, 16 months of deprivation of the right to possess and carry weapons, and the payment of compensation of 310 euros.
This crime took place a few hours after a Civil Guard officer was murdered in Llanes (Asturias) by her ex-partner, who had also been a member of this force. Both cases are being investigated as crimes of gender-based violence, and the official confirmation of the murder last July in Benahavís is awaited. If the three murders are confirmed, the number of women killed this year would rise to 36, 1,377 since 2003. And there are already 23 minor orphans registered this year due to this violence, 533 since they have been counted, in 2013.
