“We must denounce that young people have to flee their country,” says a reader

The children of Ceuta deserve dignified care, like all human beings, even more so because they are especially vulnerable. This traumatic experience can take a huge toll on them for their entire lives. Let us welcome them and give them the care they need. But, at the same time, as a society that claims to defend human rights, we have the obligation to denounce those who allow their citizens, including the youngest, to have to flee their country, risking their lives. How must one live for mothers and fathers to leave their minor children in such dangers? Shouldn’t we all raise our voices in unison and say with Émile Zola: “I accuse”?

Loose soil

After the severe fires, you will know that the burned vegetation, as well as the scorched lands, have become completely loose, without attachment to the ground. What do you think will happen when the autumn rains and the October and November DANAs occur? As a retired hydrologist, I know there will be a dragging of contaminated soils, burned trees and shrubs, with the consequent contamination of waters, blockage of watercourse crossing works, and river overflows. So I would ask you to start working now to carry out the necessary works and minimize the damage. Otherwise, we may have to cry, and not only for the material losses of the summer.

Ostentation

A few days before returning to the classrooms, anxiety increases. Resuming the task means understanding that the work of teaching is relegated to a second plane. Instead, high ratios appear, the difficulty of properly attending to the diversity of students, and the bureaucratic burden. Added to this is the current way of determining the worth of teachers: activities and projects that are frequently displayed on social networks. In the painting The Quack Dentist, by Theodoor Rombouts, according to its Museo del Prado description, the central character intends to show his supposed mastery in performing extractions through the ostentation of a molar necklace. In contrast to that culture of exhibition, educational quality or excellence has more to do with what is not shown on social media.

Straight lines

We learned to talk about our wounds, to recognize that we need help, and to understand that mental health is important. And when it doesn’t happen, a new guilt appears thinking that we are not progressing. One can know that they are doing everything possible and have a bad week. One can improve, feel bad again, and that does not mean failure. We have applied to recovery the same logic as to the rest of our lives: we want to measure it and accelerate it. But a wound does not always follow a straight line. And not everything that hurts has to immediately become a lesson.
