A mother and a daughter, a minor, died this Wednesday at the Joan XXIII Hospital in Tarragona where they had been admitted for the injuries they suffered during the downpour on the 21st. The two women had been working that night at the night market in Roda de Berà and were resting when the wall of a garden, dragged by the downpour, fell on them.

The storm in the early hours of the 21st caused injuries to nine other people and significant material damage to vehicles and flooded basements. About 200 people from a campsite had to be evacuated as well as the young people who were in a nightclub. The mother and daughter, originally from Peru, were rescued by the Firefighters and taken to the Joan XXIII hospital in critical condition, according to Diari de Tarragona. The hailstorm repeated three days later in Tarragona causing about thirty injuries. The hailstones reached the diameter of a tuna can. The storm caused the death of about a hundred pigeons in the port.
The mayors of Tarragona and El Vendrell regretted that an alert had not been sent to the public in advance. The Government justified this Tuesday not having sent Es-Alert messages to citizens’ mobiles during the double storm. The spokesperson counselor Sílvia Paneque attributed the decision to technical reasons and that the strategy was agreed collegially. The spokesperson claimed that protocols are reviewed by the system once applied in each emergency but defended the Government’s management. Comuns and Junts, PP and Vox have requested the appearance of Núria Parlon in the Parliament.

The City Council will call a day of silence this afternoon for the death of the two victims. The president of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, has expressed condolences to the families and friends of the two victims, “It is news that hits us deeply. All my support in these very painful moments,” he said.
