The Missouri Supreme Court dealt a setback this Thursday to President Trump and the Republicans by blocking the implementation of a new electoral map designed to give the Republican Party an additional seat in the House of Representatives. The court ruled that the new congressional district boundaries must be approved by voters in a referendum scheduled for November before they can be applied.

“The congressional district boundaries have not taken effect and will not take effect unless and until they are approved by the voters,” the court stated in its ruling. “The congressional district redistribution established by the General Assembly in 2022 remains fully in effect for the November 2026 general elections.”

The decision is a setback for the Republicans, who had pushed for the rapid approval of a map favorable to their party with a distribution of seven Republican seats and one Democrat. The redesign sought to dismantle the district currently represented by Emanuel Cleaver, a Democrat from Missouri, thereby opening a new opportunity for Republicans to win another seat in the House.
