The Generalitat has opened a sanctioning file against the company of the employee who, while operating a grinder, caused the July fire in the Les Gavarres massif, in La Bisbal d’Empordà (Girona). The spokesperson and Minister of Territory, Sílvia Paneque, explained that the company faces a fine of 300,000 euros.

Paneque explained that the fine derives from the “breach of the contract itself in an Alfa 3 plan situation.” During an extreme heat situation, the Generalitat and its subcontracted companies must restrict some of their activities to prevent possible forest fires, and in this case, that obligation was not followed.
The UTE formed by Construcciones Rubau SA and Aquaterra Servicios Infraestructuras SL was in the eye of the storm after it was detected that the fire that burned about 2,200 hectares originated from their road maintenance work in the area. An employee had used a radial saw and a spark triggered the conflagration. The company subcontracted by the Generalitat can still appeal the file, and therefore the 300,000-euro fine is not yet final.
The spokesperson also explained that this file is “compatible” with the judicial proceedings arising from the actions of the Rural Agents and the Mossos d’Esquadra.
