The Mossos d’Esquadra arrested a 42-year-old man on Friday accused of seriously assaulting his partner in Aitona (Segrià), according to the newspaper Segre. The woman remains admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of the Arnau de Vilanova Hospital in Lleida due to the injuries sustained, although her life is not in danger, according to police sources.

The gender-based assault occurred around six in the morning on Friday. The Medical Emergency System (SEM) activated an ambulance that initially transferred the woman to the primary care center in Aitona. From there, due to the severity of the injuries, she was referred to the Arnau de Vilanova hospital, where she was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
The woman’s medical care activated the protocol established for cases of gender-based violence, updated last July. This protocol establishes that healthcare professionals are obliged to report to the police or the Public Prosecutor’s Office cases where there is a risk situation or well-founded evidence of gender-based violence. The Mossos were alerted to the case and began an investigation to locate the alleged perpetrator of the assault, who was later arrested on a property in Torres de Segre (Segrià).

The Aitona case occurs just over a month after the last gender-based murder recorded in Catalonia. At the end of July, a 34-year-old woman died after being stabbed, allegedly by her partner, in a home in the Sant Martí district of Barcelona. The couple’s two children, aged eight and four, were in the home at the time of the incident. The alleged perpetrator was arrested hours later. The Generalitat counted that death as the fourth femicide of 2026 in Catalonia.
