A 64-year-old woman died this Saturday morning in Ayna (577 inhabitants, Albacete) in one of the bull runs that the municipality celebrates this weekend for its patron saint festivities. The woman, who was participating in the first of these bull runs, was gored by one of the bulls when she was outside the protective barriers installed along the route.
“In one part of the route, in Las Cuevas, she stood still at the barrier and when one of the bulls started to run, it charged her,” explained Juan Ángel Martínez, mayor of Ayna. Videos circulated on social media by some of the attendees of the bull run show the woman outside the fences, moving in the opposite direction to the bulls.
Castilla-La Mancha’s 112 received the alert at 10:55 AM, activating a medical helicopter. The woman, the mayor pointed out, was from Catalonia and was with her family in a hamlet in the Sierra del Segura. The severity of her injuries caused her to die while being transferred to the helipad, after undergoing emergency surgery by the health services present at the scene.
In the bull run, a man around 60 years old was also injured, who was at a different point on the route and was gored in the arm by another of the bulls. The Ayna Town Council, its mayor indicated, has suspended the events planned for this Saturday due to the festivities in honor of Nuestra Señora Santa María de lo Alto, which run until September 8 and have been tragically overshadowed by this event.
