A severe accident involving Thai driver Tasanapol Inthraphuvasak (ART Grand Prix), from Formula 2, at turn 19 of the Madring circuit, which is hosting the Spanish Grand Prix for the first time, caused fire and a red flag during the first and only free practice session of the category. Inthraphuvasak, who exited the car on his own, lost control of his car exiting turn 19 and crashed the rear into the wall of the semi-urban Madrid circuit. The impact caused fire and stopped the F2 free practice session so that operators could remove the car from the track and clean the layout.
