The derailment of a train in French Normandy causes 44 injuries

At least 44 people were injured this Friday due to the derailment of a train between Rouen and Caen, in France, according to French authorities and the French railway operator, SNCF. The prefect of the Normandy region, Jean-Benoit Albertini, reported that one of the affected is in critical condition and has been evacuated by helicopter.

The incident occurred around 7:30 pm, when the train collided with an unidentified object and derailed near the town of Cléon, according to authorities. There were 180 passengers on board. The French Minister of Transport, Philippe Tabarot, explained on the social network X that 140 firefighters are on site to assist the injured and passengers.

Meanwhile, SNCF has stated that an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the accident, which is currently unknown, and that the conclusions will be communicated “with full transparency.” The group has expressed its “solidarity” with the injured and their families, as well as with the affected staff.

The prefecture of Seine-Maritime, the local authority, has recommended that the population avoid the area. Train service between Rouen and Caen, and between Caen and Le Havre, is suspended and an alternative bus service will be provided, SNCF detailed.
