Verónica Díaz Robles was appointed this Tuesday by the Morena leadership, headed by Ariadna Montiel, as the state coordinator for the defense of the transformation in Zacatecas. The appointment places her directly in line as the party’s candidate for the governorship of the State for the 2027 elections. This is the ninth announcement of Morena coordinators from the 17 States that will renew their governments in the midterm elections.

Díaz Robles has a background linked to Morena and the federal administration. She was the delegate of the Welfare programs in Zacatecas and maintains political closeness with the Monreal group. Additionally, she was married to Luis Enrique Monreal, brother of the governor, David Monreal, and of the Morena coordinator in the Chamber of Deputies, Ricardo Monreal. These family ties have been part of the public debate about her possible role in the succession, after the anti-nepotism rule removed Saúl Monreal, the governor’s brother, from the race, who withdrew from seeking the position. Social organizations and political sectors in the State have questioned the possibility that, through Díaz Robles, the Monreal group retains its decisive influence in the State’s politics.
The ruling party’s internal process brought together seven aspirants: Díaz Robles, close to the Governor; the Morenistas Ulises Mejía Haro, from the group of the deputy and close to the president, Alfonso Ramírez Cuellar; José Narro Céspedes, who is seeking the coordination for the second time; Geovanna Bañuelos, for the PT, and Carlos Puente, for the Green Party.
The PT had raised the hand of Senator Geovanna Bañuelos as its main aspirant. Alfredo Femat Bañuelos, state leader of the party, has maintained that there is rejection of the continuity of Monrealism and defends that a PT profile lead the coalition in that central-northern State of the country. The PT representation has not been present at the announcement. The Green Party has been the only one of Morena’s two allies to endorse the appointment.
