The United States Government questions the now-ended administration of Gustavo Petro in Colombia. This Wednesday, it has decertified the Andean country for the second consecutive year, including it in the list of countries that have not sufficiently cooperated in its fight against drugs. However, the State Department has given a boost to Abelardo de la Espriella, president of Colombia for 40 days: “Colombia is oriented to regain its place as our main security ally in the hemisphere, and the military, police, prosecutors, and courts of the country finally have a worthy defender in President de la Espriella,” reads the message sent by President Donald Trump to the United States Congress, a requirement fulfilled year after year.
In fact, the text points out the high probability that the decision will be reversed in 2027. “The people of Colombia made the brave decision to elect Abelardo de la Espriella as president. He has committed to leading an aggressive campaign against coca cultivation and cocaine production, which reached record levels under the failed socialist policies of his predecessor,” it reads. “If, as expected, Colombia makes progress in aggressive coca eradication and dismantling its terrorist networks during the following year, it will consider lifting the ‘demonstrably failed’ status on the country, which is maintained only due to the incompetence and chaos produced by the previous far-left government, which was in charge for most of last year.”
