One of the first —and most controversial— executive orders that Donald Trump signed when he became president of the United States again on January 20, 2025, was titled: “Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth in the Federal Government.” The objective of the rule is to erase trans people and diversity, proclaiming that there are only men and women, boys and girls. “United States policy is to recognize two sexes, male and female. These sexes are not changeable and are based on a fundamental and incontrovertible reality,” it proclaims. This has forced American citizens to include one of the two categories on passports and other official documents, but only the one that reflects the person’s sex “at the moment of conception.”
The rule has been widely criticized, and one of the latest to do so publicly has been former Olympic athlete and current Fox News contributor Caitlyn Jenner (New York, 76 years old). “Nowadays, documentation is extremely important. You have to show your ID all the time, so, as a person in my situation, who has transitioned, I put in a lot of effort. I worked with a law firm to make sure everything changed from ‘M’ [male] to ‘F’ [female], even my birth certificate,” she said on April 7 in an episode of the podcast Tomi Lahren is Fearless.
During an extensive conversation with host Tomi Lahren, Jenner stated that she had been affected by the rules promoted by the Trump administration —to whom she has publicly shown her support and claimed to have voted for in both 2016 and 2024—. “I had all my documentation in order: my passport, my global entry permit… I traveled all over the world,” she commented. However, her passport recently expired and, as she explained, the new document sent to her by the State Department listed her sex as “male.” Jenner said she tried to correct her gender marker by mailing the State Department a printed copy of her amended birth certificate. “I did everything I could and they sent it back to me with an ‘M’, they didn’t change it. What should I do? It’s a security issue. I can no longer travel abroad,” she lamented.
What Jenner did was write a letter to Donald Trump himself, as she detailed next. “I was at Mar-a-Lago two months ago and I wrote him a letter explaining all of this, how it’s affecting me and many other people. Unfortunately, he wasn’t there that weekend. The Secret Service agent said he could get it to him, leave it on his desk and so on,” explained Jenner, who stated that she had not yet received a response from the president. “I haven’t heard anything from him. He’s quite busy right now. My gender identity doesn’t have much importance in this matter, okay? So I understand. I like him very much and I love what he’s doing,” she continued on the podcast. That is to say, despite the ultraconservative’s transphobic policies directly affecting her, Jenner, who ran as a Republican candidate for governor of California in 2021, maintains her trust in him.

The former star of Keeping Up with the Kardashians—she was married to Kris Jenner from 1991 to 2015, the year she publicly announced she was a trans woman— said she doesn’t blame Trump “at all,” but doesn’t believe “this was well thought out.” “This is a major problem,” she maintained.
Online, many users have criticized Jenner’s contradictory defense of Trump, pointing out that his policies are harmful to her and to the LGTBIQ+ community she has been defending for years. “I wish there had been some kind of sign,” a Reddit user sarcastically wrote. “It’s exhausting to hear these idiots complain about injustices after being warned a million times about what was going to happen,” another pointed out. “Who could have predicted this besides everyone?” a third person joked. “Go to hell! You voted for this,” another concluded.
Jenner is not the first trans celebrity to have problems with her passport. In February 2025, actress Hunter Schafer, known for her role as Jules in the series Euphoria, criticized in a TikTok video that her new documentation listed her as a man. “It’s the first time this has happened to me since I changed my sex. It’s been about a decade now. And I think it’s a direct result of the administration our country is operating under. And I guess I’m scared of how these things are slowly being implemented,” she lamented. The actress confessed to her followers that she was “in shock” because she never thought it would happen, but also warned: “That doesn’t change anything about me, or about being trans, even if it makes my life a little bit harder.”
