A judge sends six defendants to trial for throwing eggs at PSOE deputies before Sánchez’s investiture in 2023

“Traitors, they should be killed.” The shout was heard in a café near the Congress of Deputies on the morning of November 16, 2023, shortly before the investiture session in which Pedro Sánchez was elected began. A judge in Madrid has agreed to open a trial for the six people accused of shouting this and other insults, as well as throwing eggs, at four socialist deputies who were there having coffee: the Basques Daniel Senderos Oraá and María Luisa García Gurrutxaga, the Valencian Vicent Sarrià Morell, and the Aragonese Herminio Sancho Íñiguez.

The Prosecutor’s Office requests that the accused be sentenced to pay a fine of 8,640 euros for public disorder and disrespect to authority. The private prosecution, for its part, asks that they be imposed a sentence of six years in prison and a fine of 6,000 euros, understanding that, in addition to public disorder, they committed an attack against authority. Likewise, it requests that they be required to compensate each of the affected deputies with 10,000 euros.

In the order to open the oral trial, reported by eldiario.es and accessed by EL PAÍS, the judge requires the six accused to present a joint and several bond of 40,000 euros to secure any possible liabilities that may be imposed on them after the trial. And warns them that if they do not present this amount, “assets will be seized in sufficient quantity to secure the indicated sum.”

That November 16, Sancho Íñiguez, one of the affected deputies, told this newspaper that shortly after 7:30 he left the hostel near the Congress where he had spent the night and went to have breakfast at the café-restaurant El Barógrafo, at number 10 Príncipe Street, where he had arranged to meet the other three deputies. “On the street, next to the entrance of the bar, there were two people who, as I passed by them, made several comments that I did not understand, but that I did not like. Upon reaching the table, I told my colleagues what had happened and that things could get complicated,” said the Aragonese.

According to the parliamentarian, shortly after several men entered the café shouting at them, so one of the deputies decided to call the police who had escorted them the day before. “When I was about to reach Carrera de San Jerónimo, I felt something hit my face. It was an egg,” he added.

The Prosecutor’s Office maintains that the accused, with “clear animosity towards the political ideology” of the parliamentarians and “guided with the intent to disrupt” the investiture session, heckled and insulted the socialist deputies. “Traitors, you will pay for this”; “disgusting, traitors, they should kill you”; “this is how we will be every day, you won’t be able to live in Madrid” are some of the expressions recorded in the Prosecutor’s Office’s statement collected by Efe. The Provincial Court of Madrid will have to set the date for the trial against the six accused.
