Amid tensions over the 10 officials from Sinaloa that the United States Department of Justice has requested for their links to drug trafficking — including the Morena governor Rubén Rocha Moya — the Government of Mexico has highlighted the pending issues Washington has regarding extraditions. Since 2018, the Mexican Administration has requested the transfer of 269 people and, to date, none have been granted, according to details provided by the president, Claudia Sheinbaum, this Tuesday in her morning press conference. Among the Mexican fugitives from justice mentioned is the king of the invoicing schemes Víctor Manuel Álvarez Puga; also José Ulises Bernabé, responsible for a police facility in Iguala related to the Ayotzinapa case, and the former governor of Tamaulipas Francisco Javier García Cabeza de Vaca, wanted for organized crime.
For now, the United States has denied 36 of these requests and has at least 233 processes “pending completion.” However, Sheinbaum has assured that they will continue insisting on the delivery of more than two hundred fugitives from Mexican justice. “From January 1, 2018, to May 13, 2026, 269 extradition processes and they have not sent any, because the relationship is reciprocal,” she emphasized. “There are very serious cases for Mexico, there are invoicing operators, former governors, accused of organized crime, Ayotzinapa… and none of these alleged criminals have been handed over to Mexico,” she added before asking for reciprocity from its northern neighbor. “Why have they not handed over any, if these are relevant cases and there is reciprocity?” she asked.
