Andrés Manuel López Beltrán has requested to step down from the party’s Secretariat of Organization to run for a federal deputy position in Tabasco in the 2027 midterm elections. The decision, announced this Monday through a letter addressed to the newly appointed Morena leader, Ariadna Montiel, represents the most significant political move by the son of former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador since he took on a formal role within the party structure.

In the document, dated May 25 in Mexico City, López Beltrán states that he will leave both the Secretariat of Organization of the National Executive Committee and his place on the National Elections Commission. The reason, he explains, is to run “through popular election” for an electoral district in Tabasco, which includes municipalities such as Centro, Jalapa, Tacotalpa, and Teapa, one of the politically most symbolic regions for Obradorism.

The leader has highlighted in his message the results of his management at the head of Morena’s territorial structure. He claims to have contributed to increasing the party’s registry by 10 million members and has emphasized the installation of credentialing modules throughout the country.
