The Mossos d’Esquadra have arrested a 58-year-old man accused of intentionally causing a fire on July 6 in the municipality of Carme, in the Anoia region of Barcelona, which affected more than 450 hectares, forced 33,000 residents to be confined, and damaged some homes.
According to the Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia (TSJC) on Thursday, the alleged arsonist has been placed in provisional, communicated, and without bail detention for an aggravated forest fire crime. The man, who had no prior record, was arrested last Monday, July 27, after a joint investigation between the Mossos and the Rural Agents identified him as the person who caused this fire, as well as two others in the same area: one on June 29 and another in July 2024.
The fire on July 6, which was stabilized the following day, started on the shoulder of the BV-2131 in Carme, where partially burned remains of cardboard fragments and a pack of beer cans were found, leading investigators to the hypothesis that it was intentionally set. Thanks to the statements of several witnesses who passed through the area before the fire started and security camera footage, which allowed determining the vehicles present in the area, the Mossos were able to identify the suspect, who was arrested last Monday and the next day was placed in preventive detention by court order.
