Isabel Díaz Ayuso is going to set foot on Sunday in Mexico, a country she considers to be a “narco-state” governed by an ultra-left dictator, Claudia Sheinbaum. The president of Madrid has been using a very aggressive tone similar to that of Donald Trump for three months to refer to the rulers of Latin American countries governed by the left, as is also the case in Colombia and Brazil. The president of Mexico has responded with disdain towards Ayuso when asked about words she considers a provocation.
Ayuso’s team reported this Thursday an institutional trip of 10 days in which she will visit four cities and meet with top-level businessmen, such as executives from the cement giant Cemex or the multinational restaurant franchise Alsea. On the agenda released from Sol, her attendance at an event in honor of the conqueror Hernán Cortés at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Mexico stands out, a gesture with an important political background.
The Madrid president has positioned herself as a defender of the actions carried out by the conquerors 500 years ago. She insists on writing Méjico even though in that country the debate about the spelling of the name does not even exist and there is absolute consensus that it is written with an X due to its Nahuatl origin, the language of the Aztecs (the RAE itself recommends that it be written with an X). The wing of the PP to which she belongs considers that the Spanish black legend must be fought, the one that holds that the Spanish empire spread death and destruction wherever it went without taking into account that it brought universities, laws were developed to stop abuse of the indigenous people, and moral figures such as Friar Bartolomé de las Casas emerged, who managed to have slavery prohibited. These theses have been defended in recent years by historians and novelists who have achieved great sales success.

Of course, Ayuso considers that under no circumstances should Spain, as a state, apologize to Mexico, an effort by Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the former president, and now by his successor, Claudia Sheinbaum. For years, the Mexican government has asked that it be recognized that during the conquest, which Cortés began in February 1519, atrocities were committed, and that this be the first step to open a period of reconciliation. In 2019, López Obrador sent a letter to the Spanish government to attend to this request. He did not even receive a response. Obrador is the founder of Morena, a split from the PRI, the party born after the Mexican revolution that governed hegemonically for 70 years. Morena has a more leftist tint than the PRI but maintains the country’s stability in the same way. The president left office with popularity close to 70%, numbers that are equally favorable for Sheinbaum.
