The mayor of Barcelona, Jaume Collboni, has announced the installation of a monument in tribute to the engineer and urban planner Ildefons Cerdà in Universitat square, which will be ready in the first quarter of 2027. The councilor revealed the decision at the inauguration event of the Any Cerdà commemoration, within the framework of the 150th anniversary of the engineer’s death, held in the Saló de Cent of the Barcelona city hall, in which the Minister of Territory and Housing, Sílvia Paneque, and the dean of the College of Engineers, Pere Calvet, also participated.

Collboni detailed that the City Council will commission the project for an artistic intervention through a “restricted” call in which 3 artists with recognized careers will be invited to participate. The jury that will evaluate the proposals and decide the winner will be made up of members of the Barcelona Public Art Council, while the contest will be announced at the beginning of May “with the intention of having a winning proposal during the month of July.”

“It is a space that was and is one of the gates between old and new Barcelona that he planned. There, in 1861, the first public building of the city began to be built, which was the University of Barcelona,” he said in reference to the location of the monument.
