The Mossos d’Esquadra arrested five people aged between 21 and 35 early Saturday morning for allegedly attempting to steal copper from the train tracks in Roda de Berà (Barcelona), as part of a preventive operation.
The action is part of the Pla Via, the specific Mossos operation to prevent and combat copper thefts and other incidents on the railway network, the force reported in a statement this Saturday.
After the recent copper thefts recorded, the Mossos had established several surveillance points near the railway infrastructure and, early this morning, the officers detected two vehicles heading towards an area near the train tracks in Roda de Berà.
When the police intervened, two people fled on foot taking advantage of the darkness and the officers identified the three occupants of the two cars, two men and a woman.
During the searches, they located and seized several objects compatible with this type of criminal activity.
Meanwhile, another unit participating in the same operation detected a third vehicle approaching the monitored area and, upon noticing the police presence, the driver tried to leave the place hastily, but the officers intercepted it and arrested the two occupants of the car.
The officers found tools, work clothes, and a flashlight in the vehicle, among other objects of interest for the investigation.
The detainees, four men and one woman who are accused of an alleged attempted theft with force, will be brought in the coming hours before the Instruction Section on duty of the Court of First Instance of El Vendrell (Tarragona).
