The jurist and politician Josep Maria Trias de Bes Serra, who was a deputy in the Congress for CiU and the PP in the eighties and nineties of the last century, passed away yesterday in Barcelona at the age of 81.

The chapel of the Catalan politician will open this afternoon at the Sant Gervasi funeral home in Barcelona, where the funeral will be held tomorrow, this center has reported.
Belonging to a family of the high Barcelona bourgeoisie, Josep Maria Trias de Bes was born in 1944 in Madrid, since his father was a diplomat and that year he was working in the Spanish capital.
A lawyer by training, he began his political activity during Francoism in the PSUC. Later, he was a deputy for the nationalist coalition CiU between 1980 and 1993 in the Congress, where he was secretary of the Board and later vice president.

After leaving Democratic Convergence (CDC) due to disagreements with Jordi Pujol, he led the PP candidacy for Congress in Barcelona in 1996 and was again elected deputy.
However, he only held that seat for a few months, as he resigned after being appointed by the José María Aznar government as president of the public shipping company Trasmediterránea, which he prepared for privatization, a position he left in 1999.
After being away from politics for several years, between 2009 and 2010 he was a member of Union, Progress and Democracy (UPyD), a party promoted by former socialist leader Rosa Díez.
