The confrontation led by a Vox deputy in Congress, facing off with the first vice president, is not an isolated incident but a reflection of the growing political tension experienced in our country and beyond our borders. It is especially concerning that this type of behavior occurs precisely in the seat of popular sovereignty, where words, respect, and the debate of ideas should prevail. If those who represent the citizens replace dialogue with confrontation, one must ask what example is being set for society as a whole. In fact, exemplary conduct should be an inherent responsibility of those who hold public office. Politics not only decides, it also educates. What becomes normalized in the chamber ends up filtering outside of it. And perhaps the most worrying thing is that identifying the word “politics” with this type of scenes contributes to increasing citizen disaffection and distancing more and more people from it. If manners are not cared for in the lower house, where should they be? Because when the example fails, not only politics suffers, but also the quality of our democracy.

Trump’s crusade
Talking about God, and the values of Christianity, calling an activity a crusade that precisely contradicts the religious message and that of Christians, is a short-sighted excuse used by dictators. Those who are very far from the idea of loving one’s neighbor. Trump has accused Pope Leo XIV of “being weak, selling out to the progressives, and not supporting him in his ‘crusade against the ayatollahs.’” The Pope has replied that war is never a crusade, nor is it beneficial, and that it goes against the doctrine of the Church.

Word games
The leader of the opposition, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has described the Government’s measure to regularize immigrants with a chilling alliteration of the letter i: inhumane, unjust, unsafe, and unsustainable. Since he does not explain where the humanity or injustice lies, his reflection, following his model, can be described as incoherent, bland, deluded, and infamous. Immigrants and Spaniards deserve information and reflections more aligned with reality and not word games.

Real equality
I know a deaf child who had to undergo surgery. His family acted as interpreters so that the medical team could communicate with the child. When his grandmother told me this situation, the movie Deaf immediately came to mind, where the protagonist goes through a similar situation at the time of delivery. We are not aware of how important it is to be able to communicate and how our rights are violated when this is not possible. Can you imagine going to the hospital, being in an operating room, in the delivery room, in a medical consultation and not being able to communicate because no one understands us? When we see it up close, we think about how important it is to invest in quality public services so that our rights are guaranteed and our taxes translate into resources at the service of the citizen, so that equal opportunities are real and effective.
