The mayor of Barcelona, Jaume Collboni, has announced in Sarajevo, where he is on an international cooperation mission, that the city will host a multilateral meeting of the municipalities that are part of the District 11 project. If Sarajevo was named during the Balkan war as the eleventh district of Barcelona (which has ten) by Mayor Pasqual Maragall; a year ago Collboni replicated the idea with the Cities of Palestine, which he wants to help rebuild after the attacks by Israel.

Collboni made this announcement on Monday after meeting with the mayor of the Bosnian capital, Samir Advic, on the second day of a trip that will also take him to Warsaw and Kiev (where he will meet with President Salvador Illa).
In Sarajevo, the technical staff who have been working for months in the fields of humanitarian action for refugees and technical cooperation from Palestine and Jordan with Barcelona will be able to learn firsthand about the previous experience of the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Among the priorities is the improvement of public services and the planning of the future reconstruction of the cities now at war.
Collboni valued a program where municipal technicians from the participating cities work hand in hand: “It is cooperation based on the experience and knowledge of technicians, doctors, nurses, architects, urban planners, who help rebuild a city and do so over a longer period of time. This new way of collaborating, this District 11 method is precisely what we are starting with the cities of Palestine.”

The mayor of Barcelona also revealed in Sarajevo that Barcelona will host the first Mediterranean Mayors Conference, within the framework of the Regional Forum of Foreign Ministers of the Union for the Mediterranean. A meeting to which Sarajevo has also been invited.
The second event announced by the mayor will also take place next November, on the 24th and 25th, but in this case in Barcelona. As a continuation of the Mediterranean Cities Conference held in the Catalan capital last year to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Barcelona Process, this year the ‘1st Meeting of Mayors of Mediterranean Cities’ will be held at the Pedralbes Palace. It will feature the participation of about fifteen cities, including Genoa, Izmir, Istanbul, Ramallah, Tangier, Tetouan, Amman, or Montpellier, among others.
