Judge Juan Carlos Peinado, who opened oral proceedings against Begoña Gómez on June 20 and prohibited her from leaving Spain, issued a ruling this Monday demanding that Pedro Sánchez’s wife “prove” that she only used the passport last week to travel to the United Kingdom. The court temporarily returned the document to her so she could attend her daughter’s graduation. However, after recovering it, Peinado states that there is no record in it of any exit or entry on the authorized days. Therefore, he requires the Prime Minister’s partner to, “within the non-extendable period of five days,” demonstrate that she used it exclusively “for the specific purpose for which the precautionary measure” issued against her was lifted.

Through a brief document, barely a page long, Peinado again focuses on Gómez and even threatens to accuse her of the crime of “breach of precautionary measure.”
On June 29, Sánchez’s wife requested permission from the court to leave Spain between July 7 and 10. First to Turkey, to the NATO summit of heads of state and government held in Ankara. And then to the United Kingdom, for her daughter’s graduation. However, the court only authorized her to travel to Great Britain: a decision made by Judge Antonio Viejo in place of Peinado, who was on vacation last week. “This request should be favorably received given, on the one hand, the good judicial cooperation relationship between Spain and the United Kingdom, even after Brexit, as well as the nature of the event to be attended,” argued Antonio Viejo.
