Junts: “If Feijóo has something serious to explain, we'll see each other in Waterloo”

Junts per Catalunya pressures but does not strangle Pedro Sánchez’s Government. In an interview on Catalunya Ràdio, Jordi Turull pointed out that Junts “is not here to support the PP or the PSOE” and stated that if the Popular Party wants to propose a motion of no confidence, they know where they have to address the issue: “If Feijóo has something serious to explain, see you in Waterloo.” Junts refers the PP to meet with Carles Puigdemont in Belgium if they want to explore any agreement.

The intervention of the secretary general of Junts was meant to clarify the party’s position after the invitation made this Monday by the PP leader, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, to weave an instrumental alliance of parties with the aim of ousting Pedro Sánchez from the Government. “184 deputies are demanding immediate elections. If those who say it are consistent and do it, we can find a solution in a short time,” Feijóo said during an interview on Telecinco, referring to the sum of PP (137), Vox (33), Junts (7), PNV (5), Coalición Canaria (1), and UPN (1). Feijóo’s words were mainly directed at Junts and PNV, and he made it clear that if he does not attract Catalans and Basques, he does not consider presenting a motion because, without guaranteed support, it would “divert the focus” from PSOE corruption.

Junts has been repeating for weeks that Pedro Sánchez’s cycle is already exhausted and demanding elections, but the Catalan independence party is clear that helping to propel a PP and Vox alliance to the Government would have a cost difficult to bear in Catalonia. The leadership’s idea is to maintain formal distances from the right and far-right, but to deepen the wear on Sánchez and the PSOE with the aim that the Executive feels so cornered that it opts to call early elections.

On Friday, Junts’ spokesperson in Congress, Míriam Nogueras, rejected supporting a motion of no confidence that would bring down the Government and that, if it occurred, would unite the votes of the Catalan independence party with those of the Popular Party and Vox. “We are not here to put in and take out Spanish governments,” she defended. However, Nogueras did insist that Pedro Sánchez must bring forward the general elections.
